Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly experienced, well-motivated and autonomous individual to take up a new post with a national remit to support implementation of innovative treatments in mental health care across the UK.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration (MH-TRC) brings together world-leading research expertise and infrastructure funded by the NIHR and located in major universities and NHS Trusts across the UK to accelerate translation of discoveries in mental health research into clinical practice. In 2023 a new £42.7 million investment into mental health research was announced by the NIHR and the Office for Life Sciences. This is Phase 1 of the Mental Health Mission (MHM), which will be delivered via the MH-TRC. The MHM consists of two demonstrator sites (in Liverpool and Birmingham) and five workstreams (Capacity Development, Mood Disorders, Early Psychosis, Data and Digital, & Children and Young People). As part of the Phase 1 MHM funding, the MH-TRC wishes to appoint a National Implementation Lead to be employed by and based in the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) and supervised by Professor Hamish McAllister-Williams, joint lead of the MHM Mood Disorders workstream.

Main duties of the job

As part of the MH-TRC and MHM teams, this role will work at the intersection between Universities, NHS Trusts, the NIHR, Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and Office for Life Science (OLS). Although the post will be based in CNTW, the role requires working closely with: academics and clinical academics from across the UK; the MHM Operational team including the Industry Working Group; NIHR; companies and industry developing products, programmes and services aimed at people with mental illness; NHS mental health service providers; regulatory bodies such as the Medicines and Health Care Product Regulatory Authority (MHRA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE); The NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN)

The key roles are to support the translation and implementation of industry and MHM innovations (products, programmes, services) into clinical care/practice, through engagement with NHS delivery infrastructure to understand where service needs (Service Pull) interact with industry development programmes (Technology Push).

About us

Areas of responsibility will include:

  • Have/develop a high level of awareness of potential industry and MHM innovations (products, programmes, services), achieve through working closely with MH-TRC and MHM staff, the CRN and interacting with industry.
  • Have/develop a high level of awareness of the steps necessary for products, programmes and services to be considered for implementation in the UK.
  • Establish links with service providers across the UK to develop an understanding of the needs of services and the barriers to implementation.
  • Support implementation of innovations including by assisting the in the collation of efficacy, safety and health economic data related to the innovation and sharing "lessons learnt" and "best practice" between different commissioners and service providers.
  • Advocate for PPIE involvement in the implementation of innovations, supported by the MHM PPIE Lead.
  • Engage with the NIHR and OLS to support the delivery of MHM objectives.

The appointee to the post is unlikely to have extensive experience of working in all the areas that the new role requires. As a result, a flexible, enthusiastic and proactive approach is essential to build relevance experience and expertise. The post holder should be an excellent communicator able to work effectively with a wide range of individuals including experts and individuals developing potential innovations, clinicians, senior NHS managers and those in a range of senior national positions.
