Job summary

This post is suitable for individuals who are enthusiastic about delivering excellent patient care and getting involved in medical education. It will allow you to gain skills and experience in teaching whilst you also develop your knowledge and skills in psychiatry. You will be working alongside other keen and extremely passionate educationists and supportive team. Successful applicants will also be funded to study for a postgraduate qualification in medical Education with Newcastle University. A fantastic opportunity to add an educational qualification to your portfolio.

The senior teaching fellow post is suitable for a doctor post core training with MRCPsych, either before, during (as an OOPE) or after higher training and will have a great emphasis on leading educational developments with innovation.

As a teaching fellow, your time will be divided between medical education and clinical commitments. However, a larger proportion of your time will be spent on medical education where you will support the delivery of Newcastle MBBS curriculum within the Trust. The average teaching commitment of the post is 5 sessions per week, but the intensity of teaching varies at different times of the year according to the curriculum.

You will also work out of hours alongside other junior doctors. Our teaching fellows also receive regular clinical and educational supervision.

Main duties of the job

To further develop and improve teaching of undergraduate medical students within Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne, and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, and involved in following educational activities:

  • Formal teaching sessions: You will be actively involved in delivering regular teaching sessions as well as create and improve existing teaching sessions.
  • Resource development: You will be involved I the creation and development of teaching and learning resources
  • Clinical teaching: Active participation in bedside teaching in clinical areas, including formative assessments, assessment practice on the wards, observed history taking or formulation sessions whilst the students are based in clinical areas.
  • Facilitation of student feedback, during clinical placement
  • Pastoral support: Being able to provide pastoral support for students and supervision provided if there are concerns.
  • Student professionalism issues familiarise yourself with processes in place to support professionalism issues.
  • Assessments: You are expected to familiarise yourself with the delivery of the various UG assessments as part of the curriculum

As senior teaching fellows, you will also:

  • Support further development of postgraduate teaching for junior doctors.
  • Support the development of stage 4 SSCs
  • Have opportunity to undertake and evaluate an innovative medical education project and complete certificate of medical education.

The successful applicant will work within the medical education team at CNTW. Training in teaching methods will be available from the Post Graduate Certificate of Clinical Education and/or Training the Teachers seminars at Newcastle University Regional Postgraduate Institute, or equivalent. The Teaching and Research Fellows will be expected to attend and satisfactorily complete one of these courses. The Certificate of Clinical Education comprises teaching at Newcastle University and approximately 60 hours of self-directed learning and 6 days with the University (currently the course is delivered remotely).

Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne, and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is a University Trust that provides a substantial amount of mental health teaching to medical students throughout the new curriculum. It is the lead Trust for the Tyne, Wear and Northumbria Base Unit delivery of Psychiatry for the Faculty of Medicine of Newcastle University.

CNTW trust works closely with Health Education North East, it hosts fifty core training posts, nineteen GP trainee posts, fifteen foundation posts and over thirty higher psychiatry training posts. The post holder will be involved in developments in postgraduate teaching and delivery of some aspects of this teaching.

The average teaching commitment of the post is 5 sessions per week, but the intensity of teaching varies at different times of the year according to the curriculum

Clinical commitments

Clinical commitments will be working into adult or mental health services in Newcastle, this will be done under clinical supervision from a consultant who will lead in the service the post holder works into. The doctor will be working at the level of a higher trainee and receive clinical supervision appropriate to their experience. There will be jointly developed learning objectives for the clinical work being guided by the learning outcomes described in the higher specialty curriculum.

  • Keen interest in teaching.
  • An excellent communication skill, including ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
  • Able to work constructively with a team multidisciplinary research group
  • Highly motivated individual with good time management skills
  • Be able to work with multiple tasks, with different timescales.
  • Ability to sustain self and support others.
  • Have a sound knowledge of psychiatry with good clinical skills

This role attracts a 37% enhancement for out of hours work along with other higher trainees in the trust. The average weekly hours this will apply to will vary depending upon your rota pattern which will be confirmed prior to your start date.
