Job summary
The Band 6 Staff Nurse will play a key role in delivering high-quality, child-centred care within the paediatric ward. The post holder will provide clinical leadership on shifts, supporting the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for children and young people with a range of acute and complex needs.
As a senior member of the nursing team, the Band 6 will support junior staff, contribute to the effective day-to-day management of the ward, and promote a safe, supportive learning environment. The role requires a proactive approach to safeguarding, risk management, escalation of care and multidisciplinary working, ensuring that care is delivered in line with Trust policies, national standards and best practice.
Main duties of the job
The Band 6 Staff Nurse will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, effective, and smooth running of the paediatric ward. Working in a busy and dynamic environment, the post holder will provide visible clinical leadership on each shift, supporting the coordination of patient care and maintaining high standards across the team. They will prioritise workloads, manage patient flow, and respond proactively to clinical and operational pressures, ensuring children and their families receive timely, high-quality care.
In addition to delivering expert nursing care, the Band 6 will support and supervise junior staff, acting as a role model and providing guidance to ensure safe practice. They will coordinate staffing, allocate duties according to skill mix and patient acuity, and escalate concerns where necessary. The post holder will liaise with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate admissions, discharges, and continuity of care, contributing to a culture of efficiency, safety, and patient-centred service delivery.
