Hearing screens are carried out shortly after birth, in maternity wards and within the community. The principal test involves placing a small acoustic probe in the infant's ear and running an automated test that identifies sound emitted by the ear. Alternatively, small disposable electrodes may be attached to the infant's head and earphones applied to its ears. An automated test then attempts to identify an electrical, neurogenic response to sound.
The role is to ensure all new parents are offered the newborn hearing screen in a timely and professional manner and to undertake the Newborn Hearing Screen, by the gathering and recording of clinical test data relevant to the hearing screening process.
To work as a member of the team, participating in the Hearing Screening Programme of newborn babies, under the daily management of the Local Newborn Hearing Screening Programme Manager.
