Job summary
The trusts Porter/Drivers and the community Portering Services support the provision of a timely and reliable portering service to all wards, departments and specialist areas throughout the Trust's two main acute Hospital sites, the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle along with several cottage Hospital sites across the trust and outlying centres, GP surgerys etc.
Porters are involved with a wide range of duties and responsibilities which centre around the movement of patients, medical gas, specialist goods, waste and equipment, driving duties around the county and all other ancillary tasks required in order to deliver safe and responsive patient care.
Main duties of the job
- Undertake careful and considerate patient movement via wheelchair, trolley, or bed.
- Maintain high standard of hygiene in line with Trust's hygiene code of practice and comply with infection control procedures at all times.
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of children at an individual level.
Undertake the movement and use of any/all relevant machinery in the disposal of all waste, in accordance with prescribed methods, procedures and current legislation, including HTM 07-01 guidelines.
- Remove and transfer all waste streams from wards, departments and residential accommodation to appropriate disposal holds/collection points in accordance with the prescribed methods and procedures.
- Transport Domicilary linen into the community as a lone worker.
- Routinely check, change and deliver medical gas cylinders in accordance with the prescribed methods and procedures.
- Carry out and record daily inspections of fleet vehicles.
- Record and update vehicle mileage and fuel receipts on a daily basis.
- Ensure fleet vehicles are left secure.
- Undertake careful and considerate transfer of furniture and equipment including clinical equipment between the trust wide hospitals, wards, departments and residential accommodation under the direction of the appropriate authorised Trust staff.
- Drive van to trust wide hospitals, Chemists or GP centres, and waste tug when required.
- Transport pathological, pharmaceutical, and other specialist medical supplies between hospitals trust wide or to GP centres.
