Job summary

Band 6 Haemodialysis Nurse, West Cumberland Hospital, 37.5 hours per week

Applications are invited for the above post based primarily in the Haemodialysis Unit at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven but with the ability to provide cover for the Cumberland Infirmary dialysis unit, Carlisle. On-call availability will be required for the post.

The unit consists of 11 dialysis stations for patients of all needs.

As part of the role you will be able to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care of patients requiring haemodialysis. You will also be required to take charge of the haemodialysis unit on a regular basis, as required and contribute to the smooth running of the unit through the acceptance of agreed additional responsibilities with the ward manager. The requirement to provide excellent leadership skills is essential to ensure the effective delivery of patient care and resources. The post will require to act as link nurse to ensure high standards of patient care.

Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care of patients requiring haemodialysis. Take charge of the dialysis unit on a regular basis as required. Contribute as requested by the ward sister/charge nurse to the smooth running of the unit through the acceptance of agreed additional responsibilities. Demonstrate excellent leadership skills to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care in the absence of the unit sister/charge nurse. Act as link nurse as required.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

  • Provide and lead nursing care without supervision, in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Perform haemodialysis therapy using cannulation of AVF and grafts, and access via CVC's for patients with ESRF on the dialysis unit and for acute inpatients when needed.
  • Carry out patient assessments relating to the care of haemodialysis patients and initiate appropriate clinical interventions, to include adjustment to target weight based on fluid assessment.
  • Monitor and act upon changes in blood results and liaise with medical staff.
  • Perform a range of physiological measurements and interpret the data, adjusting the dialysis therapy accordingly to ensure adequacy of results, in line with national standards.
  • Commence intravenous therapy and blood transfusions as prescribed.
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of acute hypovolaemia/hypotension and manage treatment of deteriorating patients.
  • Give specialist advice to patients, relatives and other health care professionals.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems relating to dialysis machines as they arise.

Management

  • Contribute to the smooth running of the unit by providing leadership and supervision of staff as required.
  • Provide training and guidance to less experienced members of the team, based upon current evidence-based practice.
  • Contribute to the review of staff performance.
  • Act as shift co-ordinator in rotation with other nurses in the team.
  • Participate in the provision of an on-call haemodialysis service.
