Disclosure and Barring Service:

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The changes mean that:

• youth cautions, reprimands and final warnings will no longer be subject to automatic disclosure
• the multiple conviction rule has been removed, meaning that if an individual has more than one conviction, regardless of offence type or time passed, each conviction will be considered against the remaining rules individually, rather than being automatically disclosed.

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
• Registered with HCPC
• On-going membership with the RCSLT

Experience

Essential

• oPost graduate experience.
• oExperience of delivering training to others (parents, other agencies)
• oExperience of implementing own service development initiatives.
• oExperience of working in a variety of community settings.

Knowledge

Essential

• oTo demonstrate specialist knowledge across the full range of work procedures and practises, which are underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.
• oHigh level of knowledge of current national and local strategies, clinical guidelines and legislation relating to the delivery of speech and language therapy services to early years, and school aged population.
• oTo have a highly developed knowledge of a broad range of specialist assessments as required.
• oAn understanding of the roles of other professionals involved in the specialist area of practice.

Skills & Aptitudes

Essential

• oHighly developed physical skills where a high degree of precision, speed and high levels of hand/eye and sensory co-ordination are essential for performing real time, accurate phonemic and phonetic transcriptions and signing to support speech.
• oTo use highly developed auditory, perceptual and observational skills, together with highly specialist knowledge, underpinned by current evidence based practise to assess, make differential diagnoses, structure clear care plans and adapt practise to meet individual circumstances.
• oTo be able to use highly developed communication skills for communicating and understanding highly complex, sensitive and contentious information in a verbal or written form, where there may be significant barriers to acceptance and understanding, which need to be overcome, using highly developed negotiation, influencing, persuasive, and emphatic or reassurance skills. E.g. Negotiating with or motivating parents/carers, clients; sensitive communication of condition related news, providing reassurance; managing disagreements or conflicts about client management, generating and negotiating solutions in complex and emotional situations, dealing with confrontational individuals and/or agencies.
• oSkills to lead and promote multi agency and inter agency working and collaborative practise.
• oTo be able to maintain intense concentration on a frequent basis in all aspects of patient management. In particular, to monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client communication, adapting and facilitating according to the perceived needs of the client.
• oAbility to manage own time, prioritise tasks and work independently to manage cases, using relevant policies and specialist knowledge to inform and make clinical decisions.
