Job summary

The Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is the largest and oldest gender clinic in the UK, dating back to 1966. We accept referrals from all over the UK for adults with issues related to gender. We accept referrals for patients who are aged 17 years and older onto our waiting list. Patients will not be offered an appointment before their 18th birthday.

We are a multi-disciplinary team, including psychologists, psychiatrists,endocrinologists, speech and language therapists, primary care physicians, and nurses. We work together to provide holistic gender care, focusing on the biological/medical, psychological and social aspects of gender.

The post holder will provide medical input to the Gender Identity Clinic, provide care for patients within the service, hold outpatient clinics and work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team. They will also be expected to offer advice to other healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care.

No specific specialty training is required to fulfil the clinical role. Individuals from a variety of medical, sexual health, primary care or psychiatric backgrounds may have knowledge and skills relevant to the role, such as medical assessment, hormonal management of endocrine disorders and menopause or experience in sexual and reproductive health and genitourinary medicine. Familiarity with psychological assessment and psychosexual assessment would also be of benefit

Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist medical assessment, diagnosis and formulation of patients with gender dysphoria.

  • Formulate, deliver and/or coordinate patient-centred management plans.

  • Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide safe, effective care to service users.

  • Advise on diagnosis and treatment both within the team and to external providers.

  • Coordinate and/or provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service) up to date evidence-based interventions to service users.

  • Provide advice on hormone therapy for patients of the adult GIC and liaise with primary care to ensure its delivery and effective monitoring.

  • Complete administrative tasks necessary for the fulfilment of the clinical role.

  • Take part in service development of the endocrine service through audit and quality improvement programs

  • Collaborate with GPs, hospital doctors and primary care physicians regarding the physical health care of patients.

  • Liaise with colleagues in other community and specialist teams.

  • Contribute to the on-going training and development programme within the team.
