Job summary
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist trust with a focus on training and education alongside a full range of mental health and Gender services. Within the Trust, the Tavistock and Portman 'Charing Cross' Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) is the largest and oldest of the 7 English GICs, dating back to 1966. It serves to formulate, diagnose, and assist adults with gender dysphoria or diversity through a biopsychosocial care pathway, involving a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, specialist nurses, speech and language therapists, and medical practitioners.
The post holder will provide medical input to the Gender Identity Clinic, provide care for patients within the service, hold outpatient clinics and work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team. They will also be expected to offer advice to other healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide senior medical input to the Gender Identity Clinic, provide consultant care for patients within the service, hold weekly outpatient clinics and work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team. They will also be expected to offer advice to other healthcare professionals in primary and secondary care.
Applicants must be eligible for registration on the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register in general psychiatry, intellectual disability psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry or forensic psychiatry. Possession of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or to be within 6 months of attaining it, is a requirement. Equivalent qualifications and experience would be considered.
Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification to the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Newly appointed consultants can be offered mentoring which will be arranged by the Executive Medical Director.

There is recognition that a successful candidate may not have the full breadth of knowledge and expertise required to fulfil the clinical role initially, especially if they have not worked in a gender identity clinic in the past. If this was the case, a period of induction and additional support from colleagues including allocation of a supervisor would be required. On-going support is available from the consultants in the team. Any additional training needs would be identified through job planning, appraisal and continuing professional development.
All applicants need to be flexible in their work as the clinic is exploring the idea of extending its hours of operation through to Monday to Friday. There will be a requirement for all new employees to be able to commit to these extended hours.
