Job summary

The Royal London Hospital is a high-volume Level 1 Major Trauma Centre and the base for London's Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). As such, it manages a large number of multiply injured patients with complex, high-energy orthopaedic trauma. This provides an exceptional environment for developing expertise in the management of polytrauma, including paediatric trauma. The department offers comprehensive subspecialty exposure, with dedicated teams covering all areas of orthopaedics, including spinal surgery and paediatric orthopaedics.

The post holder will be responsible for the ongoing management of elective and emergency inpatients throughout their admission, with duties including ward-based care, participation in surgical procedures, and outpatient clinic activity under consultant supervision. During on-call periods, the fellow will work within a multidisciplinary team to assess and manage referred and admitted patients.

Main duties of the job

1. associated with patient care.

2. Participation in elective and trauma services across Royal London Hospital and BHOC.

3. Contribution to service development and efficient delivery of care.

4. Active involvement in audit, research, and teaching activities. Barts Health NHS Trust has a medical audit department which is actively co-ordinating developments in this field. The post-holder would be expected to complete at least one audit every 6 months.

5. Supervision and teaching of junior doctors and medical students.

6. Participation in outpatient clinics (elective and trauma upper limb).

7. Assisting and performing surgery under supervision and independently where appropriate.

8. Participation in on-call rota (including consultant-level on-call at Whipps Cross Hospital).

9. Management of referred and admitted patients during on-call periods.
