Job summary

Applications are invited from exceptional, self-motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists (cancer genomics, molecular or cytogenetics) for the role of Deputy Head of Cytogenetics and Molecular Oncology.

The post holder will lead on areas of scientific, clinical and operational management of the service and deputise for the Head of Department. The post holder will be involved in the analysis and reporting of complex genomic results including molecular tests, cytogenetics and whole genome sequencing (WGS). The post holder will contribute to the research and development of genomic testing for cancer patients including supporting the senior management team with the strategic vision of the service. The post holder will contribute to training and mentoring of the scientific workforce both within the organisation and across the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH).

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Head of Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology supports the Head of Department in the scientific, operational, and quality management of cytogenetic and molecular haematology services across the East and South East London Pathology Partnership.The post-holder will deputise for the Head of Department as required, providing leadership and delegated oversight across both Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology sections to ensure the delivery of a safe, efficient, and high-quality diagnostic service.They will contribute to strategic service development, workforce planning, and continuous improvement initiatives in line with the NHS England National Genomic Test Directory, ISO 15189:2022 standards, and the Pathology Partnership's clinical and business objectives.

About us

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021. Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).

The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership.

The Partnership has three operational divisions:

Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry

Microbiology and Virology

Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics
