The post holder will work across a range of ages and settings with babies, children and young people with a range of types and degrees of deafness, age range 0-19 years. You will join a well-established community integrated therapy team, where you will be supported by a very experienced specialist in deafness alongside experienced speech and language therapists, Occupational therapists and physio therapists.
The integrated therapy team has a person centred, evidence based, and participation focused approach to support for children, young people and families. You will be joining a well-established multi-disciplinary team for deaf CYP in Tower Hamlets, working particularly closely with teachers of the deaf.
Experience of using sign in your work is particularly valuable. We also have close links with several cochlear implant centres. You will have opportunity to work with children with both hearing aids and cochlear implants in this role. You will also be providing support to children who will often have additional speech and language needs alongside deafness, so experience of a wide range of assessment and therapy approaches for all types of communication needs is particularly valuable to this role.
Main duties of the job
To be the Speech and Language Therapist responsible for managing different designated caseloads of children with communication delays / disorders within the Deafness Team (aged 0-19years). The children on the caseloads have communication difficulties arising from a hearing loss that may be with or without the presence of other difficulties, including learning, health and / or emotional and behavioural problems.
The post-holder is responsible for managing his/her own designated caseloads within both teams. The Post-holder is required to offer a number of specialist packages of care including direct 1:1 and group therapy, indirect therapy and written therapy programmes. The Post-holder must have an understanding of the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice and provide specialist reports, including advice for the Statutory Special Educational Needs procedure. S/he liaises with school staff, parents / carers and professionals in voluntary and other organisations as necessary. The Post-holder attends and / or provides reports and support for inter-agency case conferences about specific clients.
The post-holder provides both formal and informal training and support for parents / carers, school staff and other professionals from Health, Education, Social Services and voluntary agencies as appropriate.

- Recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Health Professionals Council.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of child development, and the broad range of communication difficulties and implications of difficulties for child.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the deaf client group(s).
- Knowledge and of a range of interventions and well developed applied knowledge of more specialised intervention techniques relevant to deafness.
