Trust Doctor in Critical Care Research (Eqv ST1/2)
The closing date is 21 December 2025
Job summary
Applicants are invited for an enthusiastic and academically motivated Clinical Research Fellow to join our Adult Critical Care Unit as part of our expanding research and development strategy. This post offers a rare opportunity to combine hands-on clinical experience in one of the UK's busiest critical care environments with substantial protected time for academic work within a leading research group. The Royal London ACCU provides exposure to a diverse and high-acuity patient cohort, supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team committed to clinical excellence and innovation.
This fellowship is designed to promote and develop research capability in Intensive Care Medicine. The post holder will join the Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine research group, an internationally recognised team working across a broad range of fields including infection, genomics, metabolism, functional outcomes, sarcopenia, inflammation, acute kidney injury, peri-operative care, and trauma.
Alongside your research activities, you will participate in clinical duties on the Adult Critical Care Unit under consultant supervision, contributing to the admission, assessment, and day-to-day management of critically ill patients.
Main duties of the job
You will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects and shape your own academic interests, supported by experts in bench science, epidemiology, clinical trials, clinical physiology, mixed-methods research, and machine learning.
The role provides further opportunities for developing teaching experience, particularly through involvement in our critical care MSc programme. Most non-clinical duties are centred on research or education, and your primary academic supervisor will be aligned with the research focus you select. As a pre-doctoral fellowship, the post strongly encourages and supports candidates in applying for funded higher degree opportunities during the 12-month tenure, with the aim of progressing to a subsequent 2-3-year period of full-time PhD research. Applications are also welcomed from candidates who already hold a higher research degree and wish to undertake a dedicated period of post-doctoral research within the group.
This is an excellent opportunity for doctors seeking to build a career in academic intensive care, perioperative medicine, or broader translational research. With protected academic time, structured mentorship, and access to a diverse research portfolio, the fellowship provides a strong foundation for developing research skills, academic leadership, and clinical expertise within a high-performing critical care unit.
