Locum Consultant in Adult Critical Care Medicine

Job summary

We are advertising for a locum consultant in Adult Critical Care Medicine based at The Royal London Hospital. This post is due to start in February 2026 and is anticipated to last 1 year in the first instance.

There may also be an opportunity for the applicant to work some additional sessions in another specialty and this can be discussed during informal enquiries.

Applicants should have advanced training in Critical Care Medicine or equivalent as per FICM standards and be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practice. Applications from those with a specialist interest in neurocritical care would be particularly welcomed.

The Royal London Hospital is a leading, internationally renowned teaching hospital based in Whitechapel. It offers a full range of local and highly specialist services. Home to London's air ambulance, the RLH is also the capital's leading trauma and emergency care centre. In addition, the hospital is a tertiary referral centre for renal and transplant medicine & surgery, neurosciences (including a hyper-acute stroke centre and tertiary referral head injury unit), hepato-biliary medicine & surgery, vascular and complex gynaecological cancer surgery.

Main duties of the job

The post is a full-time locum consultant post in Adult Intensive Care Medicine based at The Royal London Hospital starting in February 2026. The post holder will be responsible for the care of patients on the Adult Critical Care Unit and the Surgical High Dependency Unit. The post holder will be an employee of Barts Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at one of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

This is a fixed-term post for a locum consultant intensivist, ideally with an interest in neurocritical care. Applicants with additional specialty interests are encouraged to apply as there may be scope to undertake sessions in other services (e.g. anaesthesia). Individual circumstances can be discussed at an informal visit.
