A band 7 fixed term for 11months speech and language therapy position specialising in deafness have recently arisen as a result of Staff maternity leave..
The post holder will work across a range of ages and settings with babies, children and young people with a range of types and degrees of deafness, age range 0-19 years. You will join a well-established community integrated therapy team, where you will be supported by a very experienced specialist in deafness alongside experienced speech and language therapists, Occupational therapists and physio therapists. You will line manage one member of staff and run clinical supervision sessions for band 5 or band 6 speech and language therapists.
The integrated therapy team has a person centred, evidence based, and participation focused approach to support for children, young people and families. You will be joining a well-established multi-disciplinary team for deaf CYP in Tower Hamlets, working particularly closely with teachers of the deaf.
We have total communication approach where all modes of communication are valued and supported and where the use of sign is actively encouraged. Experience of using sign in your work is particularly valuable.
Main duties of the job
The Community Children and young people Therapy Service sits in Specialist Community Children's Services based at Mile End Hospital. It offers an integrated community based therapy service to the children and young people of Tower Hamlets and is delivered predominantly in schools, pre-school settings, clinics and service users homes.
This job role will provide highly specialist clinical assessment and intervention to children from birth to 19 years for children with a significant hearing loss in one or both ears. In addition the post holder will contribute towards the wider team both clinically and through line managing a small number of staff. They will work jointly with key deaf professionals in the borough to support the children and families, such as teachers of the deaf and deaf instructor. The team has a total communication approach and you will be expected to advocate strongly for the use of sign language (BSL) within this and to have a good understanding of the deaf community.
Multi-disciplinary working is an integral part of all aspects of this job, as is teaching and training around the specialist areas of communication disability . The post-holder will participate actively in the education and training of student speech and language therapists and other health professionals, including medical and AHP teams.
