Locum Consultant in Adult Complex Spine Surgery

Job summary

This role is essential to supporting and developing the spinal surgical practice at Barts Health NHS Trust. The spinal sub-specialty is a critical part of the trust's elective programme and is undergoing further development to ensure high-quality patient care.

The post will involve working across multiple sites, primarily at the Royal London Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital, with on-call commitments initially based at the Royal London. The successful candidate will also contribute to the establishment of a consultant-led designated spinal trauma rota, subject to recruitment completion.

Applicants must possess full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register or within six months of receiving a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview. Candidates with a sub-specialty interest in paediatric orthopaedics are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

Comprehensive Spinal Surgical Service: Provide a full adult emergency spinal surgical service, including instrumented surgeries for the population of North East London. This includes:a. Inpatient and day-case surgeries.b. Outpatient clinics.c. Participation in a 1 in 9 Consultant of the Week on-call rota as part of a 24/7 service.d. Orthopaedic Trauma Cover: Occasionally provide general orthopaedic trauma operating cover during the COW week on Monday2. Collegial Support: Support the delivery of elective and non-elective trauma and orthopaedic services by covering for consultant or registrar colleagues during periods of leave.3. Evidence-Based Care: Provide care that adheres to the highest clinical and quality standards, including the 18-week waiting time standard and any relevant local agreements with commissioners.4. Departmental Management: Actively participate in the management of the department, liaising closely with the lead clinician, Clinical Director, and Surgery/Cancer CAG Director.5. Emergency Duties: Perform other duties as required during emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.6. Flexibility: The outlined duties are subject to change based on service needs, requiring flexibility and cooperation from the post holder.
