Main duties of the job

Newham Hospital Department of Anaesthetics is undergoing significant expansion, driven by the reopening of elective theatres and the new Barts Health Surgical Strategy. This strategy seeks to improve clinical outcomes through the development of a high-volume low acuity surgical hub catering for a range of specialties.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The very busy Obstetric unit at Newham Hospital cares for women from one of the most diverse boroughs in England. Annually there are approximately 6,500 deliveries, of which 32% were by caesarean section. Over 96% of sections take place under regional anaesthesia. A 24 hour on-demand epidural service is provided. There are two dedicated Obstetric Theatres (24/7) located in the main site theatre suite immediately adjacent to the Central Delivery Suite. The anaesthetic department provides a dedicated pre-assessment service for those booked for elective caesarean sections or complex comorbidity

From Mid 2025 there will be a weekly paediatric list supported by surgeons from the Royal London Hospital.

Additionally, the anaesthetic department provides support to the Emergency Department and the paediatric ward in case of paediatric emergencies.

Qualifications

Essential

  • CCT (or equivalent) and on the specialist register, or within 6 months from interview date
  • Full GMC registration and a licence to practice
  • FRCA or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher degree such as MSc or PhD

Experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in all areas of anaesthesia, including obstetrics and paediatrics.
  • Demonstrable interest in orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia

Desirable

  • Quality improvement projects and/or research related to Orthopaedic / regional anaesthesia.
  • Experience in managing paediatric airway.
  • Experience of the UK healthcare system
  • Member of ESRA or equivalent society

Life Support qualifications

  • ALS provider PALS/EPALS/APLS provider

Desirable

  • PALS/EPALS/APLS instructor
  • ALS instructor
  • ATLS

Research

Essential
