Job summary
The Royal London Hospital is a busy level 1 trauma centre, and is the base for London's Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). Consequently, it receives a large volume of multiply injured patients, with high-energy orthopaedic injuries. It is therefore uniquely placed to provide education and experience in the management of polytrauma and paediatric trauma patients. The department also has specialists in all Orthopaedic subspecialties, including spinal surgery and children's orthopaedics The duties of the post holder will include the ward management of elective and emergency inpatients during their hospital admission, assisting with surgery and reviewing patients in outpatient clinics under the supervision of the consultant. When on-call, the post holder will be expected to manage referred and admitted patients in a team.
A weekly timetable, outlining specific duties, will be developed with the successful applicant depending on individual experience and training needs. The timetable will include on-call duties, protected teaching time, outpatient clinics, ward responsibilities and time spent in both elective and trauma operating theatres. To maintain an on-call commitment for the post holder, they will be part of the on-call rota at Newham at consultant grade.
Main duties of the job
Duties will be split between upper limb elective and trauma clinics and operating lists at the Royal London Hospital site and Barts Orthopaedic Surgical Centre (BHOC) at Newham. These clinics and lists will have in part a service commitment but also learning opportunities and the ability to evolve the successful candidates operative and decision making skills. There will be the opportunity to participate in supervised operating lists, parallel run lists and also conduct upper limb surgery unsupervised with appropriately selected cases. The post-holder will gain experience in the management of complex upper limb and multiply injured patients at one of Europe's leading and busiest Trauma Centres.Supervision of the post is lead by Mr L Di Mascio, however time is spent with all upper limb consultants from the Royal London and Newham to maximise development and scope of practice. All areas of elective and traumatic shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand surgery provided.
