Consultant Adult & Paediatric Spinal Surgeon

The closing date is 04 August 2025

Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic Consultant Adult & Paediatric Spinal Surgeon to join our expanding spinal surgery team at Barts Health NHS Trust. This substantive post supports the development of our complex spinal surgical service, which plays a vital role in the Trust's elective programme and major trauma care.

You will primarily work across the Royal London Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital sites, participating in a 1:9 Consultant of the Week (COW) on-call rota based at the Royal London Hospital. This role includes contributing to the establishment of a consultant-led designated spinal trauma rota, delivering care for both adult and paediatric spinal trauma patients.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to lead in the development of our paediatric scoliosis service and to deliver comprehensive spinal trauma and elective care within a hyper-specialised, multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

1. Patient Care: Maintain continuous responsibility for the care of patients under their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care. The appointee will be expected to lead ward rounding in the morning during their Consultant of the Week duties and on their post-operative patients. The post holder will have full professional independence in medical matters but will be managerially accountable to the Trust and the Chief Executive through their lead clinician, clinical director, and CAG group director.

2. Leadership: Lead, develop, and organise the services under their charge in alignment with the Trust's business plans. Engage with key stakeholders, including the lead clinician, General Manager, Service Manager and Clinical Director for Neurosciences.

3. Efficiency Improvement: Contribute significantly to departmental initiatives to enhance efficiency, including:

o Meeting the 18-week referral-to-treatment standard.

o Reducing patient length of stay.

o Optimising the ratio of new to follow-up outpatient attendances in line with commissioner expectations.
