Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated registered general nurse (RGN) or registered mental health nurse (RMN) to join the liaison team at Whipps Cross University Hospital as a Substance Misuse Liaison Nurse.The successful post holder will work across both adult and children's settings (Emergency Department, wards and clinics) to provide sound advice and treatment for patients with alcohol and drug related issues, its associated complexities and withdrawal management. They will also work closely with local authority and community drug and alcohol treatment services to ensure continuity of support.Through on-the-job training and active encouragement, the post-holder will ensure clinical staff working across adult and children's settings are aware of: alcohol and drug-related issues; the need to systematically screen all patients for alcohol and drug misuse; the effectiveness of appropriate brief interventions and the referral pathway for patients who require further specialist support.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will use their sound understanding of screening tools to assist in the identification of those drinking at 'increasing',' higher risk' and dependent levels of Alcohol or substance misuse. Through assessment, the use of agreed clinical tools, clinical knowledge and experience, they will also be able to identify those 'at risk' of withdrawal to ensure best management.The Substance Misuse Nurse Specialist will work in Emergency Department, clinics and wards and with other hospital teams to offer advice and treatment for patients on alcohol and substance related issues, its associated complexities and withdrawal management.The successful candidate will have a sound understanding of the management of Alcohol and drug withdrawal including complicated withdrawal, providing guidance and expertise on clinical management to other staff members both in practice and through training.

Undertaking comprehensive holistic assessment, the post holder will assess risk and plan care working in partnership with the wider multi-disciplinary team, both inward and outward facing to contribute to safe effective discharge. The co-ordination of referrals for on-going treatment and care is a key part of this role and an element of complex case management post discharge will be required.
