Job summary

We require a midwife who is passionate about managing MAU/Maternity Triage at Newham University Hospital, ensuring that optimal use is made of available resources to provide appropriate and effective cover over any 24hour period .

Main duties of the job

The ward manager will work along with the multidisciplinary team you will be responsible for overseeing the safe delivery of service in the Maternity Assessment Unit/Triage ensuring the delivery of safe and high quality care. You will lead and champion the current triage system in BSOTS

Job responsibilities

Specific Duties

E-Rostering

1.

Sign and approve all bank by Mon 10am. Modify shifts (no break/overstay / late attendance) review times written to ensure they are realistic.

2.

Prepare rota to deadline 8 weeks in advance. (auto roster with necessary modifications) Review annual leave. Annual leave to be in annual leave diaries.

3.

Liaise with bank partners to cover shifts after listing staff numbers for the week/month

4.

Sign off previous months rota for pay on the 5th of the month or the Friday before the 5th.

5.

Ensure annual leave entitlements are correct on e-roster.

6.

Review 107 folders daily and update sick on e-roster and send to back as needed. [input absences as unpaid authorised leave until clinical lead agrees the leave that should be granted]. To carry bleep 107.

I.e. Emergency AL, Carers leave, bereavement leave etc.

7.

Update e-roster with staff sickness then input date of return to work on staff sickness. Plan informal meeting immediately on return and inform HR if 1st stage required.

Staffing

8.

Write duties, expected numbers and allocated staff for your area.

9.

Complete change forms and email e-roster for all rotas and changes to staff hours (especially for preceptors do change forms following establishment meeting.

10

Review all current flexible working agreements, collect all updated flexible working agreements from Nov 1st, then input flexible working agreements on e-roster with date for review after staff meet with clinical lead. Then email e-roster with a copy of all signed and agreed flexible working agreements.

11.

Calculate annual leave for new starters and all staff who change their contracted hours and input into the e-roster.

12.

Clear communication with the ward manager via email if both staff agree to swapping of shifts.no shits should be swapped unless approved.

13.

Meet with staff to complete 1:1 every 1-3 months. Complete appraisal every year. Deadline July 31st.

14.

All calls that come in by 5pm ward manager / senior manager to ensure cover before leaving.

Meetings

15.

Organise ward meetings every 1-3 months.

16.

Attend labour ward forum and feedback to staff.

17.

Attend risk management, CLIPA, perinatal meeting, BSOTS meeting and MAU/Triage meetings. (disseminate to staff in an organic manner)

18.

Attend establishment meeting

19.

Complete safety briefing monthly with feedback from Mon/Tues meeting and MIR.

21.

Attend safety huddle meetings

Equipment / Audits

22.

Inspect sharps bin soft close and not overfilled.

23.

Check equipment lists, room lists and emergency trolley checklists that are completed and collected weekly

24.

Contact EBME monthly for feedback on all logged jobs and dates for completion and review review equipment folder.

25.

Complete Synbiotixs (hand washing and saving lives)

26.

Action QTS audit report and liaise with infection control and SERCO to make ward safe.

27.

Complete risk assessment as needed (of the area and staff).

28.

Ensure the environment is clean and I am clean green stickers are put on clean equipment

29.

To ensure appropriate stock levels for all equipment

Pharmacy

31.

Have an appropriate stock level for all drugs in use

32.

Having a robust process is in place to remove and replace expired drug

33.

Monitor and ensure effective daily check of CD drugs, including correct documentation and the key is kept separately and securely

34.

Appropriate storage of drugs to include IV fluids (to be locked cupboard in a looked room)

35.

Daily check and documentation of fridge temperature and kept locked.

General

36.

Check that clients waiting times for triaging and transfer to other areas is reduced

37.

Check traceability stats for Monofer and get notes if traceability/CRS not updated by staff.

38.

Complete Datix and respond to Datix (contact Governance Lead for the topic that should be redirected to you inform staff of your subject)

39.

Assist ward clerks with oracle ordering necessary items only.

40.

Familiarise yourself with the escalation policy and the what we should know as maternity staffs poster and ensure your staff is familiar with this.

41.

Meet with some of the clientele to review satisfaction with the service and lead on WE CARE feedback.
