Clinical Nurse Specialist – Complex Spine Surgery

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse (Band 7) to work within the Complex Spinal Surgery Team at Barts Health. This post is to cover maternity leave for a period of 6 Months.

You will be a reliable and constant member of the Complex Spinal Surgery team, supporting patients and relatives through their whole care pathway and providing advice and guidance for patients after discharge. You will be expected to develop close links with A&E, ITU, HDU and the wards multi-disciplinary teams. There will be components of education, practice development, audit & research to the role.

We are looking for a Registered Nurse, with experience in acute neurosciences and/or spinal surgery. You will have experience of working autonomously and within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as a track record of implementing improvements to patient care through skilful nursing practice. You will have initiative and drive and be able to function both independently and as one of 4 CNS under the close supervision of the Complex Spinal Surgery consultants and the Senior Nurse for Neurosciences.

Main duties of the job

The spinal service is consultant led and provides a holist approach to the treatment of patients with spinal conditions. The multidisciplinary team works cohesively to deliver and promote effective care through patient centred approaches. The spine team consists of 9 orthopaedic spinal consultants, 2 consultants' neurosurgeons, 3 adult clinical nurse specialists, 1 paediatric clinical nurse specialist, 2 extended scope practitioners and 1 MDT/Data-coordinator.

All complex acute admissions are under the complex spine consultant on-call. The non-complex cases are discussed with Neurosurgery consultant on-call. The following morning all cases are discussed in the Neurosurgery & Complex Spine Handover. The Spine CNS will attend morning handover daily (Mon-Fri), to capture new referrals and ensure these are discussed with the appropriate consultant and a plan implemented in a timely manner. The spinal CNS has a pivotal role in coordinating and maintaining the communication between the different members of the team, to ensure the smooth and effective delivery of care.

There will be a significant amount of audit, research & governance activity and the CNS will be expected to contribute to this in the form of data collection.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to at least two Outpatient clinics a week.
