Job summary
Applications are invited for the above posts to commence on a rolling basis from 6th August 2025 for 12 to 18 months in the first instance, at The Royal London Hospital (RLH).
The posts are intended to provide critical care experience in an acute adult critical care unit providing both HDU and ITU level care, to trainees with a minimum of 2 years Anaesthetic experience interested in a career in Critical Care Medicine, who will have the opportunity to participate in educational activities, training, audit and research within the department of Critical Care Medicine.
There are 2 types of posts. The first are 12 month long Specialist ICM posts with interests in either Trauma or Critical Care Follow up. The holders of these posts will receive dedicated clinical time to pursue projects related to these sub-specialty interests. The second are 18 month long CESR posts for trainees with significant experience in Anaesthesia (minimum 2 years) and Critical Care medicine. These posts offer the possibility to achieve documentary evidence in 11 of the 14 HiLos required for CESR accreditation in Intensive Care Medicine with the GMC. The 18 months would include 12 months General, Neuro and Trauma Adult Critical Care on the Adult Critical Care Unit at RLH, 3 months of Paediatric Critical Care at the PICU in RLH, and 3 months of Cardiac Critical Care ate Barts Hospital.
Main duties of the job
Admitting emergency patients to the ACCU.
Involvement in day-to-day inpatient management under the direction of the Consultants and other senior trainees.Fellows with extensive experience in Anaesthesia may also attend Cardiac Arrest calls throughout the hospital and Trauma calls in the Emergency department
Liaising with medical / surgical teams about patient's admission, progress, and discharge.
Liaising with nursing staff, physiotherapists, and other clinical staff about patient status.Caring for patients on the ACCU. This includes prescribing and supervising treatment, instituting invasive monitoring and gathering and interpreting results.Explaining the patient's condition and progress clearly to patients and relatives.Maintaining accurate medical records, including data for audit purposes.Providing and receiving pertinent handover at the start and at the end of shift.Participation in educational activities including formal teaching sessions, X-ray meetings, journal clubs and case presentations.Development of his/her own interests, including active participation in clinical audit.On- call will be a full-shift which is consistent with 1A banding under the New Deal on junior doctor's hours.Reviewing patients referred to the critical care service from other wards and from the Emergency Department
