Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, flexible and forward thinking Clinical Endoscopist/trainee Clinical Endoscopists to join us at Barts Health depending on experience/qualification. This will cover Royal London and Mile End Hospital Endoscopy Units. Support for education and mentoring will be provided for the successful candidate to be able to achieve the band 8a (if as band 7).

The qualified Clinical Endoscopist will perform Diagnostic Upper GI endoscopy, and Lower GI endoscopy (or working towards) with JAG certification. The qualified Clinical Endoscopist, if not a qualified non-medical prescriber will be supported to qualify as a prescriber once JAG qualification has been obtained. The qualified Clinical Endoscopist will undertake procedures independently once deemed competent by the Clinical Lead, and act as a mentor to trainees and will be supported to complete train the trainer.

If interested in becoming a trainee, you will be required to complete a training programme of approximately 18-24 months for dual modality. This will include attendance at training courses, completion of practical assessments, JAG training and accreditation by JAG as an independent Endoscopist for upper GI & lower GI endoscopy procedures. You'll work with the MDT and contribute to development, management and delivery of a high quality general and specialist mixed GI endoscopy service. Endoscopy experience or equivalent knowledge would be required to be eligible for this post.

Main duties of the job

The Post holder will take an active role in ensuring Endoscopy delivers the highest standards of clinical care. This will include supporting the implementation of new nationally agreed directives, programmes, audit and seeking routes to improve/develop the service and role of Endoscopy Nurse or Allied health professional.

The Clinical Endoscopist will be accountable for the care of eligible patients referred for Endoscopy and perform Diagnostic procedure. Responsible for patient post procedure and ensure safe discharge from department.

The post holder will be allocated independent weekly lists across both Royal London Hospital and Mile End Hospital and admin sessions with an agreed job plan.

If the post holder is a trainee they will be allocated specific training lists to undertake supervised scopes as part of the training programme within the agreed time period, a proportion of which should be unassisted. Evidence will be required of the completion rate/outcomes of completed endoscopies, including patient vasovagal episodes, bleeding problems, unplanned admissions and the use of reversal agent. The key performance indicators should be verified and signed off by the Endoscopy Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Lead. The post holder should be observed by their mentor undertaking endoscopies and there is a requirement to submit formative assessments during the training period.
