Job summary

Barts Health NHS Trust is currently one of the largest NHS Trust in England and encompasses four hospitals based in Central and East of London. The Trust is comprised of the Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew's Hospital, The Royal London, Whipps Cross and Newham University Hospitals. In keeping with the recommendations of the Richards Review of Diagnostics (2020) we are developing a Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) at Mile End Hospital. The CDC is part of a wider programme to reform & renew the delivery of diagnostics to meet increasing demand for services. CDCs will also facilitate patients having their diagnostic tests performed closer to home and within the local community, will be opened for 12 hours a day over 7 days a week.

We have a very exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Chief Cardiorespiratory Physiologist/scientist role at the Mile End Hospital. The post holder would be accountable to the Head of Cardiorespiratory Physiology and report to the lead for respiratory physiologist and site leadership at Mile End CDC.

The post holder will function independently as an expert physiologist in respiratory Physiology. They will work closely with service leads for Cardiorespiratory physiology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to maintain their clinical skills and to develop their skills into the cardiorespiratory diagnostics.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a key member of the Lung Function Service at the Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) in Mile End. The service will run 12 hours a day across 7 days, therefore the successful candidate may be required to work 12 hour shifts. The role is to run the lung function services at the site. There will be an expectation to participate in the service development and expansion in due course.

The role will also provide cross site working for lung function within other Trust sites. There will be an opportunity to train in cardiorespiratory diagnostics, including CPET and ECG analysis. There is also an element of training and supervising of junior staff as well as assisting in cardiopulmonary based research/audit projects. There will also be the opportunity to be involved in quality assurance within these services and for a component of training in other areas in respiratory physiology

Essential

  • BSc Clinical Physiology or equivalent BSc in Exercise Sciences / Physiology
  • ARTP Part 1 and 2

Desirable

  • Good clinical practice certificate.
  • Attendance at ARTP or other recognised CPET interpretation course
  • POETTS or similar CPET accreditation i.e BASES, ACSM
  • ECG Interpretation (SCST exam)
  • Spirometry certificate
  • Registered with, or working towards registration with the Academy for healthcare Science (AHCS) and/or registration with the HCPC.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience conducting full lung function testing
  • Experience conducting spirometry testing.
  • Experience conducting clinical treadmill exercise tolerance testing.

Desirable

  • Experience conducting clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing and interpretive report writing.
