Consultant in Critical Care and ECMO (10PA)

Applicants are invited to apply for a Consultant post in Critical Care and ECMO at Barts Health NHS Trust, based at St Bartholomew's Hospital. This will be within the department of Perioperative medicine.

St Bartholomew's hospital hosts the Barts Heart and Thorax Centre along with the Barts Cancer Centre. It is the largest specialist cardiovascular centre in the country, bringing together a wide range of expertise in clinical care, research and education for cardiovascular conditions including complex aortovascular disease, adult congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join the existing team of 54 anaesthetists and intensivists who provide cardiothoracic and general anaesthesia and critical care. This post is primarily based on the 6A intensive care unit which provides care for patients with cardiological disease (e.g. cardiogenic shock or following out of hospital cardiac arrest), any patient requiring extracorporeal support (e.g. ECMO, Impella) and patients with haemato- and solid oncology disease.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be appointed on a 10 programmed activity contract comprisingof 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA. The on call frequency is 1:7 requiring cover of ICU and ECMO. It isexpected that the successful candidate will support the training and education of medical andnon-medical staff.

More programmed activities upto a maximum of 12 may be negotiable for additional clinicalor non-clincal roles that the service needs to support. This is subject to negotiation with thesuccessful candidate.In terms of timing and content of sessions and it may be possible toadjust the post to fulfil the known gaps in our workforce for anaesthesia (cardiothoracic,general and fertility) and critical care follow up.

The list of duties will be altered to reflect changing needs of the post, subject to negotiation.Indeed, the job plan is subject to annual review and re-negotiation between the post holderand Clinical Leads.

Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience

Essential

  • Proficient in relevant procedures such as vascular access, fibreoptic bronchoscopy
  • Higher training in Intensive Care Medicine of at least 12 months.
  • Training and experience in specialist cardiological critical care
  • Experience in the perioperative care of cardiothoracic patients
  • Training and experience in the care of patients supported with ECMO
  • Training and experience in the cannulation of patients for ECMO.
  • Training and experience in the delivery of mobile ECMO and retrieval from other hospital.
