We are excited to advertise this new psychology post, with the aim to develop, manage and deliver a high-quality service to adults with inherited bleeding disorders, including haemophilias, von Willebrand disease, platelet defects, and factor deficiencies.
We are looking for an experienced Clinical, Counselling or Health Psychologist to join the Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre (HCCC).
The key focus for the post holder will be to provide psychology input to those people who were infected with Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) through the receipt of contaminated blood and blood products, as well as those affected, such as members of their immediate family.
Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to work on a Monday afternoon, which is when the Haemophilia Centre multidisciplinary meeting takes place.
The UK Public Inquiry into Infected Blood has highlighted the psychological impact for both those infected and affected by BBVs (HIV and/or Hepatitis C virus) through NHS treatments in the 1970s and 80s. Testimonies from patients and the Inquiry Psychosocial Expert Group have highlighted the impact of the receipt of BBVs and treatment for BBVs upon people's day-to-day social, interpersonal and emotional lives. Relationships with spouses, family members, the NHS and the wider community have been significantly impacted. The role is funded by NHS England, as part of programme to launch a bespoke psychological support to those infected and affected by BBVs, across the UK.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will interact regularly with the relevant medical multi-disciplinary teams at the Royal London Hospital, in addition to direct contact with those infected and affected by the receipt of contaminated blood. Managerial and clinical supervision will be provided locally by a Barts Health NHS Trust Consultant Clinical Psychologist, and additional supervision will be provided by the National Professional Lead for Infected Blood Psychological Support.
There are opportunities to be part of a larger network of professionals working within the national HCCC based schemes to share good practice and help to provide an excellent standard of care for beneficiaries and family members.
The post holder would have awareness and knowledge of the circumstances and issues related to people being given infected blood and blood products and the ongoing Infected Blood Inquiry.
Experience of working with people in challenging physical health contexts would be essential, with the ability to use psychological theory and approaches flexibly and creatively. The post holder will be required to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to easily form and maintain respectful and compassionate relationships across a network of systems.
The post holder will join a friendly and supportive Clinical Health Psychology team, which provides services to a number of health specialisms, and through which regular individual and peer group supervision is provided.
