In keeping with the recommendations of the Richards Review of Diagnostics (2020), we are developing a Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) at Mile End Hospital.

The CDC is part of wider programme to reform & renew the delivery of diagnostics to meet increasing demand for services. CDCs will facilitate patients having their diagnostic tests performed closer to home & within the local community & will be open for 12 hours a day over 7 days a week. CDC will include 2 CTs, including a NAEOTOM Alpha Photon Counting CT scanner, & additionally a Cone Beam CT system.

We provide Radiation Safety support for all uses of ionising radiation in the Trust. The Barts & RLH sites have been built & equipped under a PFI & have a range of digital imaging equipment.

We have an opportunity for a DR / RP Medical Physicist with experience in CT Physics, to act as the lead MPE for the Mile End CDC & the cross site Trust Lead MPE for CT. They will manage the Radiation Protection Programme at Mile End.

The Radiation Safety Section is based at RLH. You will be expected to work at the CDC & all Trust sites

Main duties of the job

To act as an appointed Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology for the Trust and for outside contracts, as required under The Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and The Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 respectively. To assist with the management and provision of radiation safety advice and services for all uses of ionising radiation in the Trust and diagnostic radiology physics support to the Trust and to other organisations who have contracts with Clinical Physics and in particular to act as the Radiation Safety lead RPA/MPE for the Mile End Community Diagnostic Centre. To act as the lead MPE for CT across all sites

The Mile End CDC will have access to 2 CT scanners, a Cone Beam CT system and a general X-ray room. There are 12 other diagnostic CT scanners in the Trust, plus a radiotherapy planning CT, and SPECT/CT, PET/CT scanners

The initial key priorities for the postholder are

As lead RPA/MPE for the Mile End CDC

o Working with CDC management team to ensure a governance and quality assurance structure for radiation safety and diagnostic radiology physics is in place

As cross site lead MPE for CT

o Lead on optimisation for CT and liaise with relevant staff groups

o Develop protocols for assessment of new CT technology

o Training of physics staff in CT performance evaluation
