Job summary

Barts Health NHS trust has been awarded the status of major complex revision centre for North East London.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for ahighly skilledclinical nurse specialist to join the arthroplasty team at Barts Health and help develop the revision centre. The post holder will help establish a new innovative change in clinical practice on behalf of NHSE&I, GIRFT (Getting it right first time) and BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee).

The post holder will work closely with the consultant surgeons in developing new patient pathways across North East London to improve the care of patients with problematic joint replacement. They will be responsible for co-ordinating patient care, performing clinical assessments of patients and co-ordinating specialist investigations for patients. They will help in the development and running of a multi-disciplinary team meetings,and be actively involved in audit

The post holder will need knowledge and experience in managing complex orthopaedic patients, have the ability to work independently and possess excellent leadership and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will help establish a new innovative programme of national clinical change, which is hosted by Barts Health on behalf of the British Association For Surgery of the Knee (BASK) in conjunction with NHS E+I and GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time).

The post holder will act as a clinical nurse specialist in revision arthroplasty surgery and network coordinator, fitting into and then expanding an already well-established multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining on-going communication with clinicians, nursing colleagues, as well as patients in setting up patient support, creating new pathways, developing guidelines and non-operative/counselling pathways. The post holder will coordinate the team and be responsible for running of MDTs, complex case clinics, pre-operative assessment, inpatient care and become the hub of the regional network. The post holder is expected to have counselling and leadership skills, a knowledge of complex arthroplasty as well as wound management solutions, antibiotics and a drive to improve the care for this group of patients. Part of the national funding of this role is dependent on the establishment of non-surgical care pathways and the submission of six-monthly audits to show compliance with national standards as well as data upload to the National Joint Registry and Bone and Joint Infection Registry.
