Job summary

TheNeurotraumaFellow is a key member of theNeurotraumateamand will be supported by four dedicated Consultant Neurosurgeons on a 1 in 4 weekly rota and three full time clinical nurse specialists (CNS).

Excellent team working and leadershipskills are required, and theNeurotraumaFellow will work closely with theNeurotraumaconsultants, theNeurotraumaCNS, Neurosurgery ward nurses, ACCU team, ED team, After Trauma Team, Neuroradiologists and Neuro-therapists. They will be expected to co-ordinate both the weekly Head Injury MDT meetings and the busy cranioplasty service, and contribute to the Neuro-rehabilitation MDTs. In addition to emergency surgery for traumatic brain injury, theNeurotraumaFellow will be trained to perform elective cranioplasties, complex craniofacial reconstructions, open and endoscopic skull base repair. This will often involve collaboration between the Maxillofacial, ENT andNeurotraumateams.

The successful applicant will be supported in their career development to undertake a leadership role in clinical governance and service development and they will be supported to undertake clinical research in traumatic brain injury, including recruitment to clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

The post is at Senior Clinical Fellow (Post CCT or ST8 Equivalent) in Neurosurgery for a twelve month period, although longer appointments can be arranged for the successful candidate following a suitable trial period. There is a dedicated in-house consultant led neurosurgical teaching programme, and successful applicants will be supported in their broader professional and career development, particularly with reference to FRCS (SN) and CESR.

The successful candidate must be GMC registered with a license to practice and prior experience in Neurosurgery or a related discipline (Neurology/Acute Medicine/Critical Care) is essential.

The Neurology and The Neurosurgery Departments of Barts Health NHS Trust are sited at The Royal London Hospital and the post holder will be based at The Royal London Hospital.

We a dedicated Neuro-Trauma Team as a supra-specialist service (the first in the UK) which is Consultant delivered on a 1 in 4 rota and supported by two full time Clinical Nurse Specialists. There will be the opportunity to work closely with the Neuro-Trauma Consultants, the CNS, ACCU, ED and Rehabilitation Services.
