Job summary
NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL PP) are looking for an enthusiastic NMC or HCPC registered individual with appropriate clinical experience or laboratory background in blood transfusion to join us as a Specialist Transfusion Practitioner who shares our vision of a high-quality transfusion service.
The successful candidate will be primarily based at Whipps Cross University Hospital but may be required to work on any of the Partnership sites as required by the service when needed to provide cover. You will be joining a team which comprises of a Lead Transfusion Practitioner, 6 other Transfusion Practitioners and 7 Assistant Transfusion Practitioners (at full establishment) across the 7 sites that make up the Partnership. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to represent Blood Transfusion at regional and national external meetings, contribute to service improvement via clinical audit and Quality Improvement initiatives as well as ensuring a cost effective, compliant and high-quality delivery of the blood transfusion service across the Partnership.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work with the Whipps Cross Hospital Transfusion Committee and the wider ESEL transfusion team to ensure the appropriate use of blood, blood components, and alternatives to transfusion by:
Training and education of colleagues in the transfusion pathway as appropriate to their role using existing training and competency frameworks
Development and review of policies, guidelines and SOPs
Incident reporting and investigation. The successful candidate will be provided training on investigation of clinical transfusion errors, adverse events, adverse reactions, root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective and preventative actions to improve safety and quality.
Audit of blood transfusion procedures to ensure compliance with local and national guidelines, re-designing processed where necessary and aiming for continuous improvement
Extraction and summary of good-quality transfusion-related data to support evidence-based change to processes where needed

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma. The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.
