Job summary

This is a full-time post for doctors with a minimum of four years' experience in Anaesthesia, for an average of 48 hours per week, mostly antisocial.Applicants should have an interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia but also wish to maintain and develop their skills in anaesthesia over a broad range of general, orthopaedic and gynaecological specialties.

The majority of the successful candidate's rota will be on Labour Ward (including C-section lists) and Emergency Theatre, both daytime and out of hours.

The cover out of hours is provided by a team of three resident Anaesthetists, with the consultant anaesthetist on-call from home.Regular days in elective theatres (orthopaedic, gynae or general surgery) will also be part of the rota.

Barts Health Orthopedic Centre is also situated on the NUH campus. This provides services for a large proportion of elective Orthopaedic work within the region allowing for interests in regional anaesthesia to be accommodated and developed.

During the day, a staff grade is partnered with a consultant obstetric anaesthetist allowing for training and development. Out of hours, there are two staff grade anaesthetists allocated to Labor Ward duties together with a third anaesthetist providing cover for surgical emergencies, patient transfer and pediatric resuscitation.

Main duties of the job

o Assist in the provision of safe, effective and efficient Anaesthetic services.o Comply with the outlined work program and the rolling weekly timetable of flexible commitmentso Facilitate emergency resident out of hours cover with other SAS grade Anaesthetistso Act to ensure that standards are maintained and developed through participation in Clinical Audit, evidence-based research and quality improvement initiatives.o To be familiar with the Royal College curriculum for Junior Doctor Training and ideally contribute to their continuing education by meeting the requirements needed to deliver clinical supervision as well as assessment.o Participate in continuing professional development and appraisal according to current College requirements and the GMC requirements for revalidation.o This job description is not an exhaustive statement of the scope of the job and the post holder may be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the position.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The postholder has a duty of care and personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in infection prevention and control (IP&C) and be compliant with all measures required by the trust to reduce HCAIs.

All post holders must comply with trust infection screening and immunisation policies as well as be familiar with the trust's IP&Cpolicies, including those that apply to their duties, such as hand decontamination, personal protective equipment, aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps.

All staff must challenge noncompliance with infection, prevention and control policies immediately and feedback through the appropriate line managers if required.

All employees are expected to comply with all trust policies and procedures related to confidentiality and data protection and to work in accordance of the Data Protection Act 1998. For those posts where there is management or supervision of other staff it is the responsibility of that employee to ensure that their staff receive appropriate training (e.g. HISS induction, organising refresher sessions for staff when necessary).

Conflict of interest

The trust is responsible for ensuring that the service provided for patients in its care meets the highest standard. Equally it is responsible for ensuring that staff do not abuse their official position for personal gain or to benefit their family or friends.   • Paediatric anaesthesia experience
