Job summary

These positions would suit a post- F2 level doctor who is considering oncology as a career. The post is a 0.6 WTE working Monday to Wednesday 9am-5pm.

The Chemotherapy Unit has 60 chairs and is open 6 days a week.

Duties will include: reviewing patients attending for chemotherapy, managing acute toxicities of cancer treatment and assessing patients in your own clinic.

You will be supported by clinical teams of specialist registrars, consultants, specialist nurses and advanced practitioners. There is a Cancer Assessment Unit staffed separately.

You will be joining a team of 14 'ST1-2' level Doctors which provides cover for oncology in- patients divided between solid tumour oncology and haemato-oncology.

The post will be based in the Department of Medical and Clinical Oncology

In the first instance, the posts are for a fixed term. Depending on performance it may be possible to extend the contract beyond 12 months.

The post would be suitable for junior doctors who wish to gain a period of focussed experience and training in oncology. They would be suitable for candidates who are attempting the second parts of the MRCP (see section 3 below).

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting post supporting Solid Oncology patients on the Chemotherapy Day Unit/ CAU at St Bartholomew's Hospital. St Bartholomew's celebrates its 900th year as a hospital this year and lies in the heart of the City of London. It is a specialised Cancer and Cardiac teaching hospital and is home to many eminent Oncologists and Academics, with a strong culture of research and innovation.

The Chemotherapy Unit has 60 chairs and is open 6 days a week.

Duties will include: reviewing patients attending for chemotherapy, managing acute toxicities of cancer treatment and assessing patients in your own clinic. You may be required to assist on in patient wards from time to time. The CAU will allow assessment and admission of oncology patients that you see.

You will be joining a team of 14 'ST1-2' level Doctors which provides cover for oncology in- patients divided between solid tumour oncology and haemato-oncology.

We have established teaching programmes and journal clubs and also encourage attendance in out- patient clinics. You will have opportunities for audit projects and quality improvement projects and be mentored by one of our Consultants

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND STUDY LEAVE

There are numerous educational opportunities at the St Bartholomews Hospital which the post-holder will be encouraged to attend. These include MDT meetings and a programme of weekly local educational meetings for junior doctors in oncology.

In addition, there is a very comprehensive PACES teaching programme in the early evenings for 4 to 5 weeks prior to each sitting of the examination. A mock PACES exam is also run 3 times a year. Feedback from previous trainees is excellent, the majority of whom go on to be successful in the subsequent examination.

There is a well-resourced library at St Bartholomews Hospital.

RESEARCH

Extensive research facilities exist at Barts Health NHS Trust and research is actively encouraged within the department and in conjunction with other departments of the hospital and college where there is an unusually wide range of research activity. Previous junior doctors have been able to undertake publications and audits within the department.
