Job summary

We are recruiting to ourNeuro-oncologyFellowship, which has been accredited by The Royal College of Surgeons for subspecialist training in the UK.

This fellowshipoffers the opportunity to train inNeuro-oncologysurgery at Barts Health and BHRUT hospitals. TheNeuro-oncologyFellow is an integral member of theNeuro-oncologyMDT and excellent team working and leadershipskills are required.

This role includes a Tier 2 on-call commitment at The Royal London Hospital, and an elective operating schedule at both The Royal London and Queen's Hospitals.

The successful applicant will be supported in their career development to undertake a leadership role in clinical governance and service development, and they will be supported to undertake clinical research inNeuro-oncology, including recruitment of patients to clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

In addition to the general neurosurgical on call at The Royal London Hospital, as a senior fellow supervising an ST3 trainee out of hours, the Neuro-oncology Fellow will take an active interest in acutely referred oncology cases, coordinating their neurosurgical care.

The Neuro-oncology Fellow will regularly review pre- and post-operative neuro-oncology patients.

The Neuro-oncology Fellow will regularly attend the weekly multidisciplinary Neuro-oncology Clinic held at St Bartholemew's Hospital.

The fellow will actively participate in the weekly joint BHR/Barts Neuro-oncology MDT, including vetting referrals and supporting the MDT coordinator.

The Neuro-oncology Fellow is expected to prepare and present cases at morbidity and mortality meetings and undertake/supervise clinical audit. All surgical morbidities are reviewed in the monthly Neurosurgery M&M meeting.

The Neuro-oncology fellow will be trained to perform the full gamut of neurosurgical procedures expected of a 'Day One' consultant with a special interest in Neuro-oncology, including craniotomy for intra-axial and extra-axial tumours (including the use of 5-amino levulinic acid fluorescence, intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring and awake craniotomy), biopsy for intra-axial tumour and neuro-endoscopic procedures. In addition, they will gain exposure to the operative management of deep-seated lesions such as intraventricular and circum-ventricular lesions and brainstem tumours.
