Job summary

Bart's Health is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated locum consultant haematologist to join their team. This is a maternity leave cover 1.0 WTE post.

Context:

The Department of Clinical Haematology is based on 4 sites (Royal London, St Bartholomew's, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals) and functions as one department. The medical team consists of 22 consultant haematologists and 9 haematology trainees, plus middle grade and academic haematology fellows. We have a busy and interesting clinical and research practice and hold one of the largest NIHR-funded research portfolio for non-malignant haematology research in the UK.

The Pathology laboratory is one of the largest in the UK and all laboratories are UKAS-accredited. Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University NHSFT and Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust have agreed to form a Pathology Partnership. The three organisations process more than 100,000 tests a day on behalf of patients across North East and South East London. Pathology partnerships are a nationally advocated model to enable optimisation of staff and equipment and ensure sustainability of laboratory services. The newly formed East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership will improve the quality of services for NHS patients, speed up response times for NHS clinicians, and achieve operational and economic efficiencies.

Main duties of the job

The haemoglobinopathy service at Bart's Health is a designated Specialist Haemoglobinopathy team (SHT) and is the Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) for North East London and Essex for sickle cell disease and the HCC for North East London, Essex and South East London for thalassaemia and rare inherited anaemias. We work alongside our partners in the community, acute hospital services within a well-established North east London and Essex Network. With our partners we are rising to the challenges and opportunities awarded by the move to integrated Healthcare systems and are excited to work in partnership with our patients, their families, and carers in developing a world class service. The post also includes a component of general or consultative haematology and will support the departments delivery of our single portal of advice and referral service to the local CCG.

The post holder will be part of an on call rota providing haemoglobinopathy advice for Bart's Health out of hours. This is currently on a 1:5 rota and is non-resident; consultants are not expected to be on site out of hours unless there is a major incident.

We want you to help us develop our world-leading department. We commit to supporting and nurturing you in your clinical, leadership, educational or research interests.
