Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry within the Paediatric Dental Department at Barts Health Trust in London. This will be mainly based within the state-of-the-art Dental Hospital at the Royal London Hospital site with some clinics and theatre sessions on the Trust Day Stay Wards and local outreach clinics.

The successful candidate will be required to provide care for children referred in for secondary and tertiary care, including those with genetic dental anomalies of tooth structure, impacted teeth and trauma. They will help oversee the Children's Dental Emergency Clinic and provide input into multidisciplinary clinics. The post holder will be expected to participate in professional dental responsibilities and training of the junior staff as well as postgraduate, undergraduate and therapy students.

Full GDC registration and entry on the GDC Specialist list in Paediatric Dentistry is required and the candidate must have attained the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or be within 6 months of inclusion at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

To be an active member of the Clinical Academic Group and help deliver the departmental mission of excellence in clinical care and teaching.

Continuing responsibility for providing a specialist paediatric dental service for the patients referred in to the department in line with Trust and Department of Health targets, including performing all administrative duties associated with patient care.

Leadership, development and organisation of the services in charge of the post holder in line with the Trust's business plans. Liaison and communication with the CAG Clinical Director, the Lead Clinician and the General Manager.

Job responsibilities

Provide Treatment for children referred for secondary care, including those with genetic dental anomalies of tooth structure such as, amelogenesis imperfecta dentinogeneis imperfecta, molar incisor hypomineralisation and hypoplasia.

Provide input into the multidisciplinary hypodontia, ortho-paedo and cleft clinics when requested

Provide a service for children who are pre-cooperate (under 4 years) or unable to co-operate due to medical conditions, learning disability or physical disability or severe dental anxiety who require dental treatment under General anaesthesia

Liaise with paediatric colleagues to provide dental care for children with complex medical histories

Provide treatment and advice for children with severe dental trauma

Provide treatment of children with oral pathology / minor oral surgery requirements

Provide dental treatment under sedation, general and local anaesthesia and take on roles such as IV sedation lead

Prioritize the delivery of paediatric dental services within the Dental Hospital via the role of 52 week champion and be available for fallow lists as and when they are offered

Provide clinical training and supervision of postgraduate students

Supervision and teaching and training of Junior Hospital Staff, Dental Therapist, Nurses and Students including line management of the staff dental therapists

Provide Consultant of the Day services to supervise the Childrens dental emergency clinic and Junior Staff

Take on the role of educational supervisor for a trainee according to level of experience

Administration assigned by the Clinical Lead in Paediatric Dentistry in relation to the running of the Department including managing staff leave and cover

Support the clinical Lead with timetabling for the department

Liaise with the local safeguarding teams to provide dental care for children at risk and take on roles such as safeguarding lead for the department

Line Management of the staff dental therapists

Chairing triumvirate meetings in the absence of the clinical lead
