Applications are invited for the above post which will be based at the Barts Heart Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust.

The Interventional Cardiology department is one of the biggest in the UK and Europe. Interventional Cardiology, along with Electrophysiology makes up one of the three clinical directorates within the Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The Barts Heart Centre is the biggest in the UK with its complement of 10 catherisation labs (5 of which are dedicated to Intervention) and 10 cardiothoracic theatres.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work within the Interventional Cardiology department and includes participation in the Heart Attack Centre rota based at the Barts Heart Centre (1 PA). The job plan will provide expert care to an expanding population of patients. The post-holder will be expected to be an independent operator for diagnostic and interventional cardiology procedures, as well as having a strong background in cardiovascular prevention and education. The post-holder will contribute fully both at St Bartholomew's Hospital and Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals (BHRUT) to the general management of cardiac patients through ward rounds and outpatient clinics. They will be required to have received full accreditation in cardiology as a trainee.

There is a consultant of the week ward responsibility from Monday to Friday which each interventional consultant at Barts participates in on a rota basis. The consultant is responsible for inpatient care and advice and guidance and review of referrals from other departments and divisions within Barts Heart Centre. The weeks routine job planned activities will be cancelled for each week the post holder is providing inpatient consultant of week responsibilities. There will be junior staff support in the form of at least 1 SPR, 2 FY2/IMT/Fellows and nursing and pharmacy support. This is at present 4 separate weeks of the year but could vary depending on the rota requirements.

Although there is no routine weekend working at present in this job plan, there are plans for routine weekend working which the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to. This will be job planned and may involving time off in lieu

The post holder will have an interest in education, training and simulation. They will be expected to participate in the development and delivery of educational programs for trainees and other healthcare professionals. The post holder will have experience in developing and implementing simulation-based training programs for interventional cardiology procedures with a focus on developing human factors training. They will also have a track record of research and publication in the field of interventional cardiology.

Opportunities exist within all the departments to undertake research and education as a part of the Centre of Excellence Strategy of the Trusts.

There will be an expectation for the post holder to have a special interest in education and simulation within the division of intervention with a focus on medical as well as allied healthcare professional training.

This is an outline program, and the post holder will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Director for Interventional Cardiology.

It is intended that the post holder will work approximately 8.0 PAs (direct clinical care) per week, and 2.0 PAs (supporting) when averaged through the year. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and Clinical Director for Intervention, on behalf of the Medical Director.
