Job summary
We have an opportunity for an experienced cancer nurse to join our radiotherapy nursing team at St Bartholomew's Hospital. This is a great role for a nurse who wants to work more autonomously, providing support and assessment for patients receiving radiotherapy.
This enjoyable role has a good mix of advanced clinical skills with patient teaching and counselling. Radiotherapy patients require much information pre -treatment, and on treatment monitoring of likely effects. The post holder will need to have experience of chemotherapy and be able to provide pre-treatment counselling. In this role there will be the opportunity to undertake a masters level module in on treatment assessment, and eventually to undertake an on treatment nurse clinic.
The nurses' role within the wider radiotherapy team is to provide support and undertake specialist clinical interventions such as:
- Skin care
- Tracheostomy care
- Gastrostomy care
- Complex wound management
- Phlebotomy and cannulation skills
The radiotherapy service at Bart's has won various quality awards and receives excellent patient feedback. The nursing team is small and friendly and will provide a recruit with all the necessary support and development.

Main duties of the job
This post is for an experienced cancer nurse who can work autonomously to support patients receiving radiotherapy and also mixed radio/chemotherapy.
The post holder will work in a small nursing team provide specialist treatment advice about the process and effect of radiotherapy and oral chemo to various types of patients. Many patients require nursing interventions and the post holder will be able to provide:
- skin care for the skin toxicity of radiotherapy
- gastrostomy care
- tracheostomy and laryngectomy care
- wound dressings
- phlebotomy and cannulation skills
Provide psychological support and appropriate referrals.
Provision of support to palliative care patients and make appropriate referrals.
