Locum Consultant Haematologist
This job is now closed
Job summary
The Department of Clinical Haematology is based on 4 sites (Royal London, St Bartholomew's, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals) and functions as one department. The medical team consists of 22 consultant haematologists and 9 haematology trainees, plus middle grade, and academic haematology fellows. We have a busy and interesting clinical and research practice and hold the largest NIHR-funded research portfolio for non-malignant haematology research in the UK.
The Pathology laboratory is one of the largest in the UK and all laboratories are UKAS-accredited. Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University NHSFT and Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust have agreed to form a Pathology Partnership. The three organisations process more than 100,000 tests a day on behalf of patients across North East and South East London.
Pathology partnerships are a nationally advocated model to enable optimisation of staff and equipment and ensure sustainability of laboratory services. The newly formed East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership will improve the quality of services for NHS patients, speed up response times for NHS clinicians, and achieve operational and economic efficiencies.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will join an existing team as part of the Barts Health SIHMDS laboratory. This regional specialist laboratory provides diagnostic care for more than 3.5 million people across NE London and Essex.
We currently have 8 consultants with SIHMDS haematopathology roles (4 haematologists, 4 histopathologists) and we are recruiting this post to cover maternity leave. The team also includes an SIHMDS Clinical Fellow. In addition, we have recently recruited additional scientific staff to enhance our immunophenotyping and genomic labs. The post holder will be expected to help with projects implementing digital pathology. They will also help enhance our genomic capacities and participate in haemato-oncology, diagnostic and genomic MDTs.
They will also join the general haematology team by providing a face to face clinic and have dedicated SPA time to support improvements in the delivery of general consultative haematology clinics across the service.
We want you to help us develop our world-leading department. We commit to supporting and nurturing you in your clinical and research interests. We believe that international innovation in Haematology can be driven by engaging our staff and enabling the people of East London to participate in pioneering clinical trials and new technologies
