It brings world-leading researchers, scientists, clinicians and industry together to collaborate and acceleratethe latest healthcare innovations from bench to bedside.

Barts Life Sciences supports the ambitions laid out in the NHS Long Term Plan to bring the benefits of medical advances, driven by research and innovation, to patients and the UK economy. Building on our existing strengths in basic science, epidemiology, genomics and translational medicine, we intend to focus on the development of AI and machine learning using real-world data extracted in a meticulously governed way from electronic health record systems. We will layer data extracted from medical devices and all types of imaging onto these data forms. We will be leaders in the use of structured data and the use of global health care data standards to achieve these aims. This will help us to tackle complex challenges in cancer, trauma and cardiovascular diseases, further supporting the realisation of the NHS Plan.

Proposed interview date :W/c 8th January 2024

Main duties of the job

Barts Life Sciences has partnered with Barts Charity to establish a precision medicine programme to better utilise one of the largest datasets within the NHS to find new and personalised ways to treat patients.

The NHS generates vast quantities of data at each step of a patient pathway. These data are used primarily for direct patient care, to inform clinical decisions and to organise the delivery of care. Data are also used internally within NHS organisations to monitor population outcomes, improve service delivery efficiency and improve the quality of care. The systems used to record data are also designed to support and improve the working lives of healthcare staff by supporting data access for communication across health systems, automating repetitive tasks, clinical audit and research. Correctly governed, the same data will also be used outside the health service, by third-party organisations - such as universities or commercial organisations, where data might be used for research, product and service development.

About us

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain's leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are underrepresented within Barts Health at this band.
