Consultant Clinical Scientist and Deputy Specialty Clinical Lead for Transplantation (Deputy Head of Service)

As a result of recent retirement and skills mix review in the Clinical Transplantation Laboratory, a second Consultant Clinical Scientist post has been created. The post holder will deputise for the head of department and will manage shared services across the department. The post holder will also take the lead in an area of clinical service, HSCT or Solid Organ transplantation, depending on experience and interest.

Applications are invited from experienced candidates with FRCPath in Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (H&I). Candidates with significant experience at band 8A and above in H&I who are in the process of completing their FRCPath will also be considered

Main duties of the job

The Laboratory sits within the Blood Sciences division of the NHS East and Southeast London Pathology Partnership, which provides pathology services to the Homerton, Lewisham and Greenwich and the Barts Health NHS Trusts. The laboratory supports adult and paediatric stem cell transplantation, adult kidney transplantation, paediatric heart, lung and thymus transplantation as well as a variety of immunogenetics services.

The laboratory supports training at all levels from BSHI certificate to HSST, including teaching on the Cancer MSc course at QMUL.

About us

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma. The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.
