Clinical Research as an important component in providing the highest standards of care on the NHS. There is a significant association between clinical centres being research-active and providing the best care to patients. The key to successful clinical research is ethical recruitment of patients and national guidance emphasises that patients should be pre-screened and approached for clinical research by members of the direct clinical care team. This post is combining clinical research activity in outpatient and inpatient setting across all sites.

Main duties of the job
- Assist in the development and progress of designated studies and ensure that nursing input to clinical research is in accordance with the Good Clinical Practice guidelines and the Research Governance Framework
- Lead on pre-screening and recruitment of patients in to respiratory research studies
- Develop an expertise in research skills and methodology, and share this with clinical colleagues
- Ensure all study documentation is developed in order to accurately record research activit
- Support colleagues in developing detailed and robust trial protocols ensuring effective and efficient use of resources and ensure data is collected in accordance to Good Clinical Practice guidelines
- Demonstrate good communication skills throughout the research process to assess eligibility and provide ongoing advice and information to participants with regard to their participation in research in order to facilitate effective informed consent
- Deliver care in accordance to the research protocol whilst maintaining the rights of the participan
- Accept delegated responsibilities for the development and progress of designated studies
- Ensure that clinical care delivered is participant centered and where possible evidence based manner
- Provide respiratory-disease specific, within bounds of post-holder's knowledge and training, health education to patients in outpatients
- Perform clinic-based respiratory procedures such as spirometry, venipuncture

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic respiratory nurse interested in conducting clinical research in outpatients and inpatients in Respiratory Medicine at al three sites with a particular focus on non-tuberculous mycobacterial studies.
St Bartholomews Hospital houses the regional specialist respiratory medicine service including NHSE commissioned tertiary referral services for Home Ventilation, Severe Asthma, Allergy and Cystic Fibrosis. Our outpatient department runs more than a dozen separate Respiratory clinics including those dedicated to patients with Severe Asthma, CF, Bronchiectasis, Sleep and Ventilation, Allergy including subcutaneous desensitisation (immunotherapy) clinics, Lung Cancer, Cough, Interstitial Lung disease and COPD. Our service is supported by a well very equipped Respiratory Function Unit that provides a comprehensive range of investigations including histamine challenge, skin prick testing, Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing and fitness to fly tests. Some clinics are taking place at Mile End including tuberculosis and COPD. The Respiratory Network within the Trust includes Respiratory Medicine Departments at Royal London Hospital, Mile End Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, and Newham Hospital. Each of these have teams of dedicated Respiratory Medicine Consultants, nurses and junior doctors with comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services.
