Physician in Pre-Hospital Care

This job is now closed

Job summary

Our prehospital service is provided by Barts Health NHS Trust in partnership with the London's Air Ambulance charity, and the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Clinical governance, leadership and support is provided by Barts Health, who are responsible for the doctors. Paramedics are provided by the London Ambulance Service and receive specialist training prior to undertaking their duties. London's Air Ambulance charity plays a vital role in delivering many aspects of the service including the essential helicopter and rapid response car assets, but also an infrastructure that enables excellent care to be delivered to patients.

Our doctor-paramedic team responds to major trauma patients within the Greater London area, by helicopter during daylight hours and using rapid response cars during the hours of darkness. We are looking to appoint to jobs starting in January 2025, each for six months, with one new doctor starting each month.

Our mission is to save more lives in London through rapid response and outstanding care, underpinned by our values and a high performing culture. We have a program of digital transformation underway heavily supported by all the partner organisations. We also have an active research program including randomised controlled trials and studies of lifesaving techniques including REBOA and ECMO. A system of daily, weekly and monthly case analysis ensures systematic learning from cases.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates would be expected to participate in some of our compulsory courses, ideally prior to undertaking their placements with us. During the placement, additional educational activity in the form of short courses and refresher days are held, with our Institute of Prehospital Care. Pre-commencement background reading is essential, with material being assessed as part of the sign-off process. Candidates need to have the prerequisite skills of RSI and central venous access and we expect successful candidates to arrive competent in these procedures. This may involve refreshing these skills prior to arrival if they have been achieved some time ago. Candidates must be aware that the position will involve an initial 6-week sign-off period, requiring a proactive approach and an understanding of the level of intensity and dedicated time required to complete this phase.
