Job summary

The Department of Paediatric Haematology-Oncology at the Royal London Children's Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Paediatric Haematology (10 PAs) on a substantive contract. This is a new post developed to support the growing specialist non-malignant paediatric haematology service.

Main duties of the job

The post is predominantly based at the Royal London Children's Hospital located within the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, London. The service at The Royal London Hospital serves a diverse population with the busiest paediatric ED in London. The service is designated as a specialist haemoglobinopathy team (SHT) and Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) for East London and Essex. As HCC for Thalassaemia and rare anaemias, the service is responsible for London and SE England. There is a growing immune haematology service, and the team provides consultative / laboratory advice to general and specialist paediatrics in East London and Essex. The post holder will also work alongside the haemostasis team supporting management of paediatric thrombosis and bleeding disorders and lead on the trust haematology adolescent transition pathway.

The post holder will be expected to provide additional support to the team at Whipps Cross Hospital (currently designated Local Haemoglobinopathy Team (LHT)). The post holder will participate in an attending rota covering the Royal London Hospital based haematology inpatients and day-case patients and consultations / referrals from the network. On average they will be responsible for 2 out-patient clinics per week. They will be expected to participate in a paediatric haematology non-resident on call rota (1:4).

About us

The post holder will be expected to provide care for a wide range of non-malignant paediatric haematological disorders. Barts Health NHS Trust as a whole directly cares for approximately 700 local paediatric haemoglobinopathy patients with the bulk of these (approx. 450) receiving care at the speciality centre at The Royal London Hospital. The service on the Whipps Cross site is smaller with approximately 125 local patients. As well as these local patients the speciality team at The Royal London also act as the tertiary care provider for an additional 500 regional patients mostly from North London and Essex. The service is one of the highest recruiting sites to the UK paediatric ITP registry and the post holder will have an active role in manging these patients. The Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre at The Royal London Hospital cares for over 2,000 adult and paediatric patients living with inherited bleeding disorders providing seamless care from diagnosis and into adulthood. There is a growing neonatal haematology service and the department provides an electronic advice and guidance service to local primary care colleagues. The post holder will contribute to these activities. Support for the paediatric oncology service will be provided through clinical and laboratory consultations.
