Job summary

The aim of this role is to provide, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, comprehensive assessment and management of patients with allergy & severe asthma, providing excellent standards of care through improving and facilitating multi-professional working.

In allergy, the aim of the role is to work alongside the existing post-holders in delivering nurse-led allergy services including allergen immunotherapy (sub-cutaneous and sub-lingual); biologic injections for urticaria; food and drug allergen challenge testing include drug de-labelling. Other aspects of the role include entering clinical data onto the local allergy database; audit and quality improvement projects.

In severe asthma, the focus of this role is assessment of patient knowledge and self-management, for example inhaler technique, and then educational and supportive interventions for the patients to improve their asthma control. The second focus is the safe provision of biologic injections (e.g. Omalizumab, mepolizumab) for patients with severe asthma on the Day Unit. Clinical activity will be undertaken in regular outpatient clinics, the Day Unit and also rapid-access Hot Clinics. Additionally, this role has an administrative element, assisting with patient pathway coordination and entering clinical data on to local and national severe asthma databases.

There will be an expectation to cover colleague absence as necessary.

We provide expert coordinated care for patients with difficult to control asthma and targeted specialisttherapies toimprove asthma control for our patients.

Bart'sHealth Allergy Centre is a specialist unit designated by NHSE to provide regional tertiarycare services for allergy. We provide a day-case food and drug allergen challenge testing service and out-patient immunotherapy treatments.

The band 6 nurse will work within the day unit and out-patient areas providing treatment and education for this patient group, using our WeCare values to deliver a high standard of care.

Allergy Service

BartsHealth Allergy Centre is a specialist unit designated by NHSE to provide regional tertiarycare services for allergy. Inaddition,it receives primary and secondary care providers referrals. Conditions treated include: anaphylaxis, food and drug allergy, severe rhinitis, venom allergy, urticaria & angioedema. There are multiple,weekly clinics including AHP-led CNS, dietician and pharmacy lists and a weekly multi-disciplinary team meeting. There is a monthly clinical governance meeting. We provide day-case food and drug allergen challenge testing service and out-patient immunotherapy treatments with both sub-cutaneousimmunotherapy (SCIT) and sub-lingual immunotherapy (SLIT). We treat patients who require desensitisation to pollens, animal dander or venoms and thosewhoneed biologicinjections (omalizumab) for the management of urticaria. Patients are offered the opportunity to participate in allergy clinical trials, when appropriateat the William Harvey Clinical Research Centre.We offer attachments to SpRs in the Allergy & Clinical Immunology training programme and also have Respiratory SpRs working with us.

  • Contributetodelivering the immunotherapy service,
  • Perform food and drug allergy challenge testing including drug allergyde-labelling
  • Administer biologicinjections for urticaria

  • Participate in nurse-led clinics lists providing patient education, chronic disease follow-up when appropriate, counselling for and regular review of patients on immunotherapy and biologics

  • Maintainthe allergy database.
  • Liaise with administrators regarding day case challenge bookings

Severe AsthmaService
