Job summary

This role is to support the elective and non-elective Limb Reconstruction practice at Barts Health. The Limb Reconstruction sub-specialty is a challenged part of the Barts Health 18 week elective programme. As part of the move to cross-site working the job is split across the three sites across the trust delivering Trauma and Orthopaedics. The on-call commitment is at The Royal London Hospital.

Main duties of the job

General Duties

  1. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care

  1. Leadership, development and organisation on the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts business plans. Liaison and communication with the lead clinician, Service Manager, General Manager, Clinical Director for Orthopaedic & Plastic Surgery and the Surgery / Cancer CAG (Clinical Academic Group) Director.

  1. A major contribution to the department's ongoing efforts to improve efficiency in both the delivery and the management of patient care including the 18 week referral to treatment standard, reducing length of stay and managing the ratio of new to follow up outpatient attendances in line with commissioner expectations.

  1. With the agreement of the Clinical Lead and Clinical Academic Unit Director, development of his/her own interests and specialisms within the speciality, including active participation in research programmes

  1. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training including the approval and monitoring of on calls and locum appointments

1. To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient elective and non-elective trauma and orthopaedic surgical service by providing cover to Consultant, and on occasion Registrar colleagues when leave is taken.

2. To provide evidence based care for all inpatients and outpatients

3. To have regard at all times to all relevant clinical and quality standards including those set out in the Patients Charter, the 18 week waiting time standard and any local relevant agreements with commissioners.

4. To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the lead clinician, Clinical Director and Surgery / Cancer CAG Group Director.

5. The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

6. The duties outlined are not definite and may be changed in accordance with needs of the service requiring the post holder to be cooperative and flexible.

AccountabilityThe post holder will have full professional independence on medical matters but will be managerially accountable to the Trust and the Chief Executive through his/her lead clinician, clinical director and CAG group director

Clinical GovernanceThe appointee will be required to participate in all clinical governance activities related to the Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics. This will include contributing to: - Clinical audit Clinical risk activities Clinical incident reporting Responding to complaints within the Trusts expected timescale Participating in the development of the involvement of users in planning and monitoring access to and standards of the service

The post-holder will assist with the safeguarding of high standards of care by participating in the creation of an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.

Continuing Professional Development, Medical Education & RevalidationThe post holder will be expected to construct a personal development plan which will be reviewed on an annual basis. The development plan will take account of general and specialist requirements for professional development issued by the relevant colleges and the Trust.The post holder will be supported by appropriate study leave allocations, financial support, the Trusts appraisals schemes and support for revalidation for Consultant staff. The post holder will also be paired with a named mentor upon commencement of post.
