Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR) in General Surgery. The post is for 6 months in the first instance with the opportunity to extend. The successful applicant will work in the capacity of a registrar to one of the consultants within the General Surgery Unit and will be responsible for both inpatient elective and emergency work as well as supporting the trauma team whilst on call.
The General Surgery Unit is served by four consultants with sub-specialist interest in UGI, vascular surgery, paediatric surgery and endocrine.
The post is not approved for basic or higher surgical training but will provide ample training opportunities and will suit a senior trainee committed to a Surgical career or seeking additional experience of General surgery at registrar level. Previous NHS experience is essential for this role.
The successful candidate will undertake similar duties, including on call, as the department's five specialist registrars. You are likely to rotate between consultants within the Unit on a six monthly basis. The on call commitment is one in eight on a New Deal compliant conventional rota. The Department has operated a 'Surgeon of the Week' system of emergency cover since early in 2003.
Main duties of the job
Whipps Cross University Hospital has strong links to the joint medical school of St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospitals. It also runs a number of well regarded postgraduate courses, including the Whipps Cross Higher Surgery Course (for candidates in the Intercollegiate Assessment in General Surgery) and the Whipps Cross MRCS Course. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and, where appropriate, postgraduate teaching activities of the hospital and will be entitled to a place on the Higher Surgery Course if intending to sit the Inter-Collegiate Assessment in General Surgery. Furthermore the appointee will be expected to contribute to the on going research program of the Colorectal Unit.
Clinical Governance & Audit
There is a robust clinical governance programme with a monthly morbidity and mortality meeting in general surgery. The post-holders are also expected partake in at least one audit project related to either general surgery. There is excellent support for this through the audit unit.
Study, Training and Teaching
Appointees will be expected to have completed foundation year training and embarked on or have passed the MRCS (or equivalent) examination, or to have at least completed the training requirements for the same. These posts DO NOT carry Deanery accreditation for the purposes of Surgical Training, though it is expected that they will provide training that will be of value to trainee surgeons.
