Job summary

This is a Trust Grade Clinical Fellow post suitable for doctors who wish to pursue career in Paediatric and Neonatal. Trust is committed to supporting the post holder in developing career in Paediatrics and Neonatal. There is 1WTE vacancies on a fixed term appointment for 12months - Maternity Leave Cover

Main duties of the job

Paediatric department has 21 bedded Paediatrics ward includes 7 cubicles, two bedded well equipped HDU unit. Also 6 bedded day care ward for minor day surgery for children over 3 years of age. Department also have 6 bedded observational unit.

Neonatal unit is level II, caring for babies born more than 27 weeks and has close working relation with network tertiary unit which is Royal London Hospital. Unit has 23 beds including 2 intensive, 4 HDU care beds.

Department enjoys separate neonatal and Paediatrics middle grade and SHO cover, also has separate consultant cover from 8.30 till 1900 hours Monday to Friday and separate cover at, out of hours and over the weekend and bank holidays. Rota is fully complying with EWTD, and doctors will not do more than 48 hours duty in a week.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a Trust Clinical Fellow post suitable for doctors who wish to pursue career in Paediatrics and in neonatal care. Trust is committed to supporting the post holder in developing a career in Paediatrics. This post is full time fixed term appointment for 12months and is trust grade .

Day Time Clinical Duties

Ward Round, providing cover to ambulatory unit, participating in outpatient clinics, and A*E, Providing cover to labor ward and postnatal ward, all with consultant supervision on a consultant of-the- week system.

On call Commitment

Full shift system, 7 people in a rota, providing cover to NICU, delivery suit, and postnatal ward or paediatric ward and A& E. There is a separate Registrar rota for Paediatric and Neonatal at all levels including Consultants, Registrar and SHOs.

Audit and Research

The appointee will be expected to participate fully in the departmental audit program, to aid in developing of clinical services guidelines and to support SHOs in these activities. Participation in clinical research that is related to service delivery, particularly the chosen specialty, will be encouraged and facilitated. Research registrar is in post and takes responsibility of facilitating audits and research.

Teaching

Department is actively involved in teaching medical students from Barts and London University , 6-8, 4th year medical students coming for 6 weeks. Department has lead consultant and teaching registrar in post who look after their training needs. It is expected that potholder will involve in teaching medical students, SHOs and nursing staff.

Medical Practice

All members of The Trusts medical staff are expected to practice with in the GMC guideline, in particular those contain within the booklet on Good Medical Practice and Maintain Good Medical Practice. Additionally, all members of the Trusts medical staff are expected to be familiar with the Trust Professional Standard Advisory Group Process and to follow this as appropriate.

Professional and personal development.

The Trust is committed to support professional and personal development of post holder. Post holder will be expected to participate in continuous medical education CME or Continuous professional development CPD and financial support (400 pound per annum) and study leave of (10 days per annum) are available for this purpose. Being a part of bigger trust, which is Barts Health NHS Trust, it opens up further teaching and training opportunities across the trust.

The Appointee will be allocated a consultant educational supervisor / mentor who will support appointees personal educational development. Appraisals will be timetabled on a regular basis.

Work pattern:

Full Shift night (12 hours + handover); Long day (12 hours + handover); short day (8.30 am till 17.00 hours);

1. The Department of Neonatology

The Department is newly purpose-built unit at Newham Hospital. It is working within North East neonatal network. Network comprises two level three, two level two and one level one neonatal unit. This unit is one of the busiest level two neonatal unit. Department has 6 intensive care/high dependency cots and 20 special care cots including 3 room in rooms. Unit has physical capacity of 29 cots.

2. The Department of Paediatrics

The department is one of the busiest in and around London. More than 30,000 Paediatric patients were seen in accident and emergency department in 2011.Department has two 6 bedded bays, 7 cubicles and 2 high dependency beds which provides NCPAP to children with respiratory insufficiency. One cubicle is designated for oncology patients. Observational unit has 6 bedded bay for short stay. Also, 6 bedded day care unit used for pre- and post-surgical assessment of ENT and dental patients, also used for blood transfusion to patients suffering with sickle cell and thalassemia.

4. Out-patient Department

The Childrens Outpatient Department is adjacent to Paediatric ward. There are Paediatric Clinics held 5 days of the week including neonatal follow up clinics. Outreach specialty clinics are also being held in the department.

5. Facilities

There are comprehensive diagnostics including MRI/CT and PACS with digital imaging. A new IT system has been installed which will provide an advanced Patient Administration System, electronic patient records and interfaces with pathology.

Essential laboratory facilities are available at Royal London Hospital.
