Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Dermatology Department at Royal London Hospital, for a band 6 junior skin cancer CNS. This is a new progression post, and a great opportunity for a highly motivated Dermatology nurse to transition into the Skin cancer speciality, with full support from the skin cancer team. Full training will be provided to develop your skills as a Band 6 Skin Cancer CNS, with a view to progression to a senior role when relevant competencies have been achieved.

You will already be experienced in Dermatology or skin cancer, and willing to excel in the Skin Cancer speciality. We value the CNS role, and are committed to providing training and support where required, to ensure we provide the needs of our patients. You must be willing to undertake Skin lesion recognition and dermoscopy courses to enable you to have your own nurse-led clinics.

Main duties of the job

Assist with the effectively delivery expert nursing service, primarily for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC), early melanoma and rare skin cancer patients. To ensure this caseload of patients and their families are fully informed and supported by providing clinical and social support. To assist in the development of evidence-based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines, and to establish clear lines of communication to ensure cohesive multidisciplinary management of patients.

Provide specialist skin cancer nursing advice Trust wide to support and facilitate high quality, individualized care to patients/clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, working especially closely with the other Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), the Senior Nurse and the Skin Cancer team of Doctors.

To undertake a diverse range of roles, including nurse-led services such as Holistic needs assessment (HNA) clinics, photodynamic therapy for skin cancers and skin cancer follow-up clinics. Work according to local/national guidance and protocols, and work with the skin cancer team to coordinate, develop and deliver comprehensive care and services to patients.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Assist with assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programs of care, providing specialist advice, whilst actively seeking evidence-based practice which will support clinical outcomes as appropriate. Act as resource for all patients with skin cancer diagnosis, providing advice, support and information to enable patients to make informed choices on treatments and clinical management options as necessary. This may be complex and of a highly sensitive and emotive nature. Manage episodes of care, within the skin cancer service and within nurse-led clinics, discharging patients as per protocol. Supervision will be given by the skin cancer team, and training by the skin cancer CNS. Co-ordinate the dermatology-oncology contribution to nursing practice policies & procedures across area of responsibility and trust-wide To act as patient advocate in line with the NHS plan and to actively apply in depth knowledge of holistic/socio-economic and cultural aspects of the care to clients within Dermatology, acting as a role model and resource for patients, relatives and staff. This will include patient choice. Work in partnership with support staff to ensure that care, treatment and service needs are met, focusing in particular on area of skin cancer knowledge. To act as a keyworker/point of call for skin cancer patients. To assist in the preparation of clinical information for the Skin Cancer MDT Meetings. To attend the Skin Cancer MDT meeting and provide CNS cover as part of the core membership. To assist the skin cancer team in ensuring tests have been ordered and scheduled, e.g., scans, bloods etc., in order to expedite and streamline the patients pathway. To liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team in order to ensure the skin cancer patients journey is seamless from admission to discharge, providing ongoing telephone advice & support, as required. Provide timely and appropriate written information for skin cancer patients, ensuring patients are aware of support groups and available services i.e. psychotherapy, welfare and benefits advice, complementary therapies for cancer patients, The Maggies Centres, and others. To provide a telephone helpline for ongoing support and advice, offering flexibility and easy access for patients throughout their pathway. As a keyworker and CNS, visit inpatients when required, providing patients with all information regarding their tests/ treatment plan/ disease process and ensuring that there is sufficient time for patients to discuss this information and to ask questions to ensure understanding and reassurance is delivered. Follow the skin cancer patients care in the ward setting, when required, and discuss issues with ward staff and ensure all necessary follow up appointments have been arranged. Support senior members of the MDT when discussing treatment options or breaking bad news and when competent, being available to discuss issues relating to diagnosis with the patient and their family and significant others e.g. organizing counseling, linking with palliative care, Macmillan rehabilitation team and community Macmillan teams etc. To ensure that patient information is kept up to date and replenished in all skin cancer clinics, whilst also encouraging members of the team to use it. Act as a resource both within and outside the Trust to ensure appropriate information / advice is given to patients. The post holder will provide psychological and informational support respecting at all times patients diverse cultural backgrounds with courtesy, dignity and privacy. The post holder will act as key worker for this group of patients and work with them throughout treatment no matter where they are diagnosed across the Trust or chose to be treated. To provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the skin cancer service and Trust wide. To plan and deliver education and/or practice development activities to support evidence based care. Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records) and implement audits of records to measure and evaluate care planning. Devise and implement education and training programs as required. To be aware of and champion current trends and developments in nursing, education and practice development in the NHS. To work with the Dermatology team in implementing the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance, ensuring that audit information is collated and used to improve patients care and outcomes.
