Job summary

The department of Plastic Surgery is the centre of excellence for breast reconstruction, skin oncology services and paediatric plastic surgery. The breast reconstruction service includes competence to a range of options. There is a particular emphasis for microvascular reconstruction DIEP flap and now our services are expanding so that more Black Country patients are offered DIEP reconstruction, hence this opportunity to develop the department to do further microvascular work as part of a wider team.

In addition to the breast reconstruction services, we offer a high-quality skin oncology service which includes rapid access clinics and surgeries like sentinel lymph node biopsies, block dissections and reconstruction following excision of melanomas and other skin cancers. We cover a large area which includes Wolverhampton, Wyre Forest and Cannock. We also offer Moh's surgery for skin lesions also.

We also provide a paediatric plastic surgery service, and our centre is well known for genital urinary reconstruction particularly hypospadias surgery and continues to be well renowned.

This is an exciting opportunity for motivated clinicians to join a dynamic team providing complex reconstructive care to a diverse patient population.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to be part of a team of Plastic Surgeons providing breast reconstruction services for the Black Country region.

The post holder is expected to do breast reconstruction as one part of a two-team approach for DIEP flaps and would be expected to also cover for their colleagues in case of post-operative problems.

The post holder will be expected to be on call and taking in referrals from other departments.

The main part of the job will be breast reconstruction, and it is very important that they are well versed in microvascular breast reconstruction.

The key responsibilities/duties of the post holder will be the same as the other consultants within the department.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder is expected to perform 8 PAs of direct clinical activities and a 2 PAs ofsupporting professional activities.

There may also be a requirement to undertake other similar duties as part of this post to provide a quality service. These will be consistent with the level of responsibilities outlined above.

These are subject to change, as required by the needs of the service.

The post holder will be required to participate in an on-call rota. This rota will be on a 1 in 6 basis and is paid at category B level, which currently attracts a supplement of 3%.

The post holder will be required to participate in the on-call rota.

Clinical time is allocated in sessions (blocks of time) and consultants are expected toensure optimum utilisation of the sessions allocated to them, with both time and productivity.

The post holder will be expected to manage the flow of patients through the department and achieve the standards of 12-hour waits for specialist beds and help in achieving the ED 98% target by creating the capacity to move patients from the ED.

Support will be available from all other specialties in the Trust to achieve these targets. Responsibility may be subject to change, as required by the needs of the service.

Undertake an agreed outpatient template

Efficiently utilise theatre sessions

Participate in the supervision of a one stop Rapid Access Theatre list (done by a junior doctor) for Diagnostic biopsies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Complete one clinic (Rapid Access/New and follow up), dedicated to skin oncology, every week. These clinics would be conducted in parallel with dermatology clinics, facilitating cross referrals and consultations.

The post holder will need to comply with the departments policy for minimising the number of dropped clinics/theatre lists.
